Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, would you boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, you can follow these steps :

1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3.Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4.At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5.Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

I have the same laptop.
With usplash disabled as well as with enabled, the black screen occurs and the machine completely freezes and it's impossible to continue the installation. The problem is the openchrome video driver which Ubuntu tries to use for this laptop. The only way to install Intrepid is to use the alternate CD or prevent LiveCD from running X, manually set the driver to vesa and then run X (I don't know how to do it).

In Hardy (and possibly with previous releases, I haven't tried) there was no black screen before installation. I was able to install Hardy successfully (but the resolution was too high: I think it was 1440x960 and the nominal for La1703's panel is 1280x800 and it was impossible to change it without hang) and when system tried to kill X and reboot after installation, machine friezed but after that it was possible to boot the system from hard disk, set X driver to vesa and work on Ubuntu without any problems.

The problem with openchrome has been submitted 8 months ago: http://openchrome.org/trac/ticket/165

If the problem will not be solved, I think that 9.04 should use vesa driver (and 1280x800 resolution!) on this laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703).

I can confirm this with the same chipset. On Hardy it works with the live cd, but after installation there is a black box around the mouse pointer leaving a sticky trail. Intrepid shows the same, but locks up after a few secs or clicking or moving the mouse to the edge of the screen.

Now all bugs that caused the above described situation has been already fixed upstream in trunk. The tickets:
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/156
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/165
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/263
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/97

So trunk revision is usable and even quite stable on K8M890 but there's still no new release and if 9.04 used 0.2.903 (from august 2008) like 8.10, the problem would apply to this too.

Witam.

Pozdrawiam
Bartek

This bug was completely solved in the openchrome rev710, but on jounty there is openchrome 599.

The new package with the latest openchrome version is needed.

This bug is clone of the #274340.
