Crash viewing friendster account with embedded video using Windows Media Player

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Opening a web page, particularly a friendster account with embedded streaming mp3 audio, using an embedded Windows Media Player, Firefox repeatedly crashes. This "bug" started to appear the past 2 to 3 days ago.

I am using Ubuntu Hardy. So, I do not know if the updates from Ubuntu are the ones that are causing this, or if this is a Firefox issue.

I have not encountered this "bug" using my Sun xVM VirtualBox, running my guest Win XP and Firefox for Windows.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Dear Mr. Villvicencio

You are most welcome.

Though the incidence of Firefox "crashing" has diminished, it still happens.
I am not sure if it is the embedded video or a script on the web page I
happen to be viewing that is causing the the crash. So far, as in my
previous post, when I do switch to WinXP thourgh VirtualBox, I do not
experience the "freezing" or "crashing" of Firefox, viewing the same web
pages.

As for reproducing the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04, I am sorry to say that
I am quite pleased at the moment using my Hardy Heron, with its collected
updates and the minor tweaks I did.

I have downloaded an iso of 8.10. I intend to give it a try, using a Live CD
of this version on my laptops. I prefer to wait for the next
long-term-support, than to try out the newer version on our computers in our
newer school comptuer lab. I will have to wait for the school summer break
to give Intrepid my time. Hopefully by that time, the minor quirks I have
been reading form the forums would have been ironed out :-)

Best regards,
Mon Sagullo

Since this report have a long time without activity, could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.

This email proved to be very timely. I just upgraded my Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10
more than a week ago, and a few minutes ago, I visited my daughters'
friendster accounts, and this time, it is not only Firefox that "crashed," I
literally had to log-in again into Karmic Koala. As to which of the two -
Firefox 3.5.5 and/or Karmic had a problem, I cannot guess.

Thank you very much for all your efforts to improve our Ubuntu experience

Hello, if you would be so kind enough to let me know what command/s I need
to enter in a terminal window so I can report with enough pertinent data
about a "bug" I recently encountered with Karmic Koala.

It's about an old Dell Inspiron 1100 I did a clean install. The Belkin USB
wireless I use with it works with my WRT54GL using DD-WRT sp24, but not with
the WRT54GL that also has DD-WRT sp24.

Aside from different ISP provider I have here at work and at home, and the
DSL modem provided by my two ISPs, I am at a loss why the Dell will connect
here in my workplace, but not at home.

Also, this Dell, whe I use it at home can connect with a wired connection
directly to the DSL modem, but not using the ports in the WRT54GL. Yet, it
can connect, wired, using the ports in the same brand, same version WRT54GL,
in my my workplace.

I also have another laptop which is relatively "newer" to this Dell. It used
to work fine, wired or wireless, here in my workplace and at home, before I
upgraded this laptop from 9.04 to 9.10.

Thank for all the time you and everyone else in your team put into this.

I would suggest filing a request in the answer section:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu and troubleshoot with someone until
you find out what the bug is (assuming it's not a configuration or
hardware issue). Then you can file a bug with more specific information
and link it to the Answer/Question.
Thanks.
