Bug Description

I had been running the Beta of Intrepid successfully on my Asus EEE 900 until last night. Updates were downloaded (including the latest kernel version) and the WiFi stopped working. I have tried with or without the Atheros Driver - it was working before without the Atheros driver)

I installed the Release Candiate of intrepid (8.10) and the system worked perfectly again. Downloading the updates stopped it working.

Is there a problem with 2.6.27-7-generic?

Mr. Jones,

Can you try to boot with the prior kernel to see if it works?

Grub does not show the prior kernel. I did try to edit the grub menu
but only the latest kernel was listed.

I reinstalled the RC of 8.10 and it definitely works with the original
kernel. The Atheros driver does not work and has to be disabled so
there must be support for the WiFi chipset in the versions of the
kernel in the beta and in the release candidate. These work very well
until the upgrade.

There seems to be a major problem with most of Atheros wireless cards and the recent Kernel upgrade. This definitely needs looking into (by kernel guys, I guess).

Oh, you have a 900!

Per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC/Fixes#Wireless , please try the blacklist fix described there.

I have now had time to try this.

I did a fresh install of 8.10 RC. Wifi did not work but I turned off
the Atheros Driver, rebooted and it worked perfectly. I downloaded the
updates and it stopped working. I tried loading the madwifi drivers as
you suggested, rebooted and it did not work.

I note that the kernel version on the clean install is
2.6.27-7-generic (Wed Oct 22) and after the new version is also called
2.6.27-7-generic (Fri Oct 24). Normally when a kernel is upgraded
there is a grub option to boot to the old kernel. Perhaps if the
kernels had been named differently the machine would not have been
made unusable.

I will now reinstall eeeUbuntu which is a shame. Intrepid with Office
3 was perfect until that upgrade. If you would like me to perform any
more experiments please let me know.
