evolution can't retrieve/send mail

Could you provide some more information? Are you sure you have the settings configured properly? Is Evolution in Offline mode? Are you going through a proxy? Does it give any errors? And can you reproduce this using the Intrepid Release Candidate live cd?

Yes, everything was fine, nothing's changed and now it doesn't work.

The Intrepid Release Candidate can be downloaded here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid

Try setting up your Evolution on the live cd, and see if you can send
emails. Also, please try creating a new user on your machine and see if
that user can send emails with Evolution.

Every few days I'm able to receive mail then an error fetching mail
comes up for days on end. Does either of you have a clue as to what
could be causing it?
I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Is it reproducible on the live cd? If you create a new user, can they
send/receive emails?
