Bug Description

I'm coming from bug 117555, that has now been closed.

It was working around 2 weeks ago.

Version: 0.6~cvs20070618-1ubuntu2

$ apt-cache show gnome-power-manager
Package: gnome-power-manager
Architecture: amd64
Version: 2.24.0-0ubuntu8

removing uswsusp, like suggested by wgrant on #ubuntu+1 doesnt fix the prob, and now hibernate all disappeared

Hi BUBabundo,

Thanks for filing this new report. Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please also attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies .

Additionally, lets target this report to one specific issue. Let go with suspend first. With uswsusp removed, can you comment is it the actual suspend process that is failing or is it the resume that fails. Assuming it's the resume that is failing, the following wiki will also be helpful https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend . It would be good to also attach your dmesg output after an attempted suspend/resume cycle as outlined there. Thanks.

Hi Leann.
I'll those in a bit, laptop is rebooting.
I burned a CD with RC and "Suspend" is available there on FUSA. Hibernate is not, but I guess thats because I'm running a LiveCD.

I tried clicking in suspend, and system went into power save, but it wasnt able to come back. I just got a black screen.

Thanks BUGabundo,

Yes, you are only able to test Suspend via a LiveCD, not Hibernate. You mention it's the resume that is failing so can you take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and attach your dmesg output after an attempted suspend/resume cycle? Thanks.

I'm also closing the gnome-power-manager task as this is likely a kernel issue.

I think you are making some confusion, so if need be, I can change the OP to be more clear:
With my currently installed system, I can see Hibernate from FUSA, and System Menu.
It works fine. But remember that I need to have uswsusp installed. without it, I cant see that option.

Suspend is not available with or without uswsusp.

With the LiveCD I can only see Suspend, but it failed to resume. I see no way to get logs from a LiveCD that fails to resume from suspend (other then doing some hardcode and mount LiveCD /var/log to actual disk instead the virtual ram drive).

So Leann can you make your request a bit more clear?

Hi BUGabundo,

Ok, I think I understand now. It's helpful to the development teams if bug reports target one specific issue. This bug report will focus on the kernel issue of why Suspend is failing to resume. The issue of FUSA not listing the options to Suspend/Hibernate is an unrelated issue to suspend failing to resume and should warrant a separate bug report.

So on your installed system, with uswsusp removed, please execute the debugging procedure documented at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and attach the resulting dmesg output after an attempted suspend/resume cycle. Thanks.

I'm sorry Leann... I rather see the lack of Suspend fixed!

The fail to resume only happend when I tested from a Daily LiveCD of RC.

Its much harder to test (especially since usb-creator is non-working at the moment, and I cant keep burning media to test it)

On my system, since I dont even have the suspend option, I cant test the resume (because I cant even put it sleep in the 1st place).

Hibernation and resume from Hibernation (as opposed to resume from RAM) is 100% with uswsusp installed.

Other then help other users on similar HW I see no interests in making extra debug.
In any case, I'll remove uswsusp and log your request.

Shall I attach it to another bug, so that this one is meant to Suspend from FUSA on a real system (aka not LiveCD)?

Here are the logs requested.

[ 2.558237] Magic number: 12:312:977
[ 2.558304] tty ttyc4: hash matches

System went to suspend, ad resume flawlessly.

Can I reinstall uswsusp again?

Hi BUGabundo,

Just to confirm, suspend/resume was successful so t would seem this issue is fixed then.

I know you mean well, but you a complicated person, arent you, Leann. I guess its a Language barrier.

I run the requested test, and with /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force it seems to work.

But can run it any other way.

Still the "visible" problem is the fact that it doesnt show up on GNOME Menus (FUSA, System, etc).

Actually, since I've uninstalled uswsusp, I dont have hibernate either. more logs on that on bug 290191.

BUGabundo and I have chatted in #ubuntu-bugs on FreeNode and have agreed that this bug will be closed with respect to the kernel as Suspend/Resume does not appear to be an issue. I'm also closing the acpi-support task as it is unrelated. Thanks.
