Bug Description

Hardware: Montevina(HP-prototype-laptop), McCreary
Software: Intrepid-beta

Description:
alsamixer v1.0.17 can't recognize multi-channel audio card properly in ubuntu intrepid beta using default para. The alsamixer v1.0.18rc3 fixed this bug but not used in ubuntu yet.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Use command " # alsamixer ", the output is as following:
                Card: PulseAudio
                Chip: PulseAudio
                ...
2. and only one bar shows up while the audio card is multi-channel.
If using " # alsamixer -c 0" , the output is as following:
                Card: HDA Intel
                Chip: Realtek ALC889A
                ...
and everything is allright.

The alsamixer version ubuntu (install files and apt-get source) used is v1.0.17.
I tried v1.0.18rc3 which is the lastest version on http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page,
and this bug has been fixed in v1.0.18rc3.

Sorry, i find out that it's not a bug later. It's a configuration problem.

I ask people in alsa project maillist and then check the configure file "/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf" in ubuntu. The line "/usr/share/alsa/pulse.conf" makes the default config to be PulseAudio.

If this line removed, the alsamixer would act as normal.

I also have a multi channel soundcard and found that a default installation of Intrepid resulted in both alsamixer and the desktop 'volume control' applet seeing only a single channel.

Like JiangWei I can confirm that alsamixer is given the ability to see multiple channels if I remove the line containing '/usr/share/alsa/pulse.conf' from /usr/share/alsa.conf and then restart alsa-utils.

The removal of the pulse audio config file doesn't feel like much of a fix to me since it looks like Intrepid is set up to use pulse deliberately - hence I wanted to ask if there is a more 'correct' fix for this? e.g. is there a pulse audio control panel somewhere which I should be using instead? I have tried changing just about everything I can think of in both the 'volume control' and 'sound preferences' desktop applets to no avail.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

'm using Intrepid 8.10 (not beta) with the latest updates and I also have this issue, I wonder if it's not related to the other bug I have reported, which can be found here. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/307574
