Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

There are several bug reports floating around that are similar to this, but at least one someone specified that we should all file separate bug reports as each issue seemed unrelated.

In ubuntu 8.10 beta USB flash drive automounting does not work properly.

USB automounting will ONLY work by following these steps.

1. Plug in a USB flash drive. Automount will fail with error "Invalid mount options...."
2. Leave that drive plugged in.
3. Plug in a second USB flash drive. Automount will succeed!
4. Manually mount the first flash drive.

Now automount will work successfully until your next reboot. You can remove both flash drives and reinsert them and they will each successfully automount.
NOTE: if you skip step 4 all is in vain, automount will not work once you remove both drives.

please Please PLEASE! Fix this.

I am running linux kernel 2.6.27.7-generic
hal version 0.5.11
gnome-volume-manager version 2.24.0

I have tried re-installing hal gnome-volume-manager

I will restart and try to provide the information asked for here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices if neccessary

Yep, I can confirm the same problem. I do not have this issue on 8.04 but it surfaced on 8.10.

I'm using the latest Sony flash drive (4GB SONY Click) which has a Samsung chip in it. The current workaround is to use the Partition Editor to mount the drive manually, however I do hope that the automount issue can be solved.

My usb 5 flash drives are seen by notifier and I can copy from them, but I cannot write to them, can anyone help me, what am I missing?? The message I get when trying to unmount is "Hal.Device.Volume.NotMountedbyHal: Device to ummount is not in /media/.hal.mtab so it is not mounted by hal"
