Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

Hi,
in Intrepid I obtained a completely scrambled and messed up screen after having viewed a video with mplayer! The only thing left to do was to kill X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, since the computer becomes unusable.

I've found a way to reproduce that error.

1) Download this HD movie (I don't know if this particular video is the problem, but at least with that it occurs):

http://anon.nasa-global.edgesuite.net/qt.nasa-global/ksc/ksc_061108_glast_launch_720p.mov

2) Play it with mplayer.

3) Close the video window.

Please let me know if you need more info to fix this! I've found that with other players (VLC, totem) this do not occur.

Hi stefano-doni,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Hello Bryce,
        thanks for the reply.

I'm trying to reproduce this error with no luck!

Now it seems like vanished: even playing the full HD video and then closing the window, the screen remains correct.

Perhaps this a recent upgrade fixed the problem?

So you can consider this bug as closed!

Thanks

Hello Bryce,
unfortunately, from time to time this bug reappears.

It is quite hard to debug it though. When it happens (i.e. screen totally scrambled) It is enough to press an Alt+Ctrl+F1 to bring the correct screen back. Notice that this is a weird behaviour too, since with this combination normally I get console number one. Instead, when the bug occurs, I get the X screen again and it is correctly displayed.

At this point I recognize that this is quite difficult to track down. Still, since it occurred to me some days ago, I attach to this bug the whole set of Xorg logs I have in my /var/log, I hope that you can find this useful.

If you have any other suggestion that can help to track this down, please just let me know.

Thanks again and keep up with the great work!

Bryce,
     thanks for having confirmed this.

Actually I'm experimenting this with Jaunty too. Too bad I have yet to find
a way to reproduce it, I can tell you it typically happens when watching
videos, going fullscreen and back.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
