Bug Description

Hello! I can set the system sounds to custom sounds, and listen to the preview by clicking in the "play" button next to the sound selection in System-->Preferences--> Sounds. However, the only sound that plays is the login sound, nothing else, not even the log out sound, plays. Sound is not affected in any other application that I've noticed.
I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 beta (32-bit), and a Dell Inspiron 1525.

Thanks in advance!

Luis Jorge.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in gnome-control-center.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hi! I've changed the package hint of this bug, because it's the most probable package being affected. I followed the methods you suggested, but the "gnome sound preferences" doesn't have a help menu, so it doesn't have a "report a problem" option, nor is it a package on its own. I hope this helps a bit more.
Thanks very much!

I doubt this is a pulseaudio problem. I can play sounds and music through alsa via pulseaudio, and also through pulseaudio directly, and this bug affects me in jaunty. I'm assuming this has something to do with the way gnome is trying to play the alert and system sounds, none of which play when the event occurs. They do all play, however, when the preview icon is clicked in the sound control panel. The login sound plays, but the logout and system beep sounds are beeps out the pc speaker. Disabling the 'play alert sound' option stops the beep out of the pc speaker as well.
If this isn't a bug in gnome-desktop, I apologise, but I think it's somewhere in gnome, since I don't seem to be having any other pulseaudio problems, through alsa or not.

I think this may be a dup of 280625, which seems to be the same thing. In any application, terminal, firefox, gajim, the default alert sound is replaced by a pc speaker beep. If someone does figure out where this is coming from, one or the other possibly should be filed as a dup of the other one.

gnome-desktop is providing the gnome-about dialog and a lib to parse desktop files that has nothing to do with sound

as best I can tell, this is the responsible package. from the description of the package:
This module enables PulseAudio to publish itself as the default sound server to the X11 root window automatically upon startup. The is also a module to playback a sound file in place of the X11 bell beep.
I hope I should assign it to this package and not pulseaudio. If this package isn't the problem, maybe we can track it down from here.
