Bug Description

I have tried all nVidia drivers over the course of the development of Ubuntu Intrepid and none have worked with the nVidia Geforce 6100. As of October 12, I can report that the first beta with all upgrades does not work with the 6100 (Rev. A) on-board chip on the MB by BioStar.

This graphics card works without a problem in all versions of Ubuntu until Intrepid.

I have tried all 3 of the drivers that are now available for use in Intrepid.

(II) LoadModule: "nv"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nv_drv.so
(II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

you do not appear to be using nvidia and may need to reinstall the driver or at least determine whether the dkms build fails.

run "dkms status" to determine if the module is installed.

if not then issue:
sudo dkms build -m nvidia -v 177.80 -k 2.6.27-7-generic
sudo dkms install -m nvidia -v 177.80 -k 2.6.27-7-generic
(you may need to change the kernel version to the output of "uname -a")

I have the same issue with nVidia 6100 and Intrepid nvidia-glx-177. X window starts but on black screen I can see only 2px line at the top.

What is the shame Xorg's driver 'nv' also doesn't work correctly with 6100 and my LCD Benq FP72E, allowing only 800x600 resolution for 17" LCD (with native res 1280x1024).

What I can do now is just to use 'vesa' driver for X (of course without any 2D/3D hardware acceleration). But at least it works with 1280x1024.

Just wanted to add a "me, too". I have the same problems as mentioned above. No problems at all with 8.04, but nothing better than 800x600 with nv drivers and a 2px thick line with 17x drivers. :-(

Is this the same bug being discussed over at nvidia in these threads?

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=115209

If so, see here for a very clumsy workaround:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1763467&postcount=22

Basically, change xorg.conf to use vesa driver and start X, then change xorg.conf to use nvidia driver and restart X.

I'm affected by this bug, but the workaround works for me.

Thank you for the hint, it works for me too.

So if I don't reboot my desktop often I can restart X once after booting and work with fast acceleration rest of time.

Maimon Mons (mmcmonster) wrote :

For what it's worth, the v96 drivers that were recently added to the repositories seems to work, at least for me.

While not the latest, it at least doesn't require rebooting the X server after each reboot of the system.

Since the latest drivers still don't work, I guess this bug should remain open.

Can others confirm that the older driver that was added to the repository seems to work? It's a new option under the System->Administration->Hardware Drivers.

Igor Goldenberg (igold) wrote :

Yes, it's work for me too, but too slow to use compiz. And I also have some weird artefacts in bottom part of gnome-terminal window even without compiz. So I still use the workaround with 'vesa' driver after reboot.

We had a laptop at work which either crashed or plainly didnt work with any version of the nvidia driver shipped with Ubuntu 8.10 (64-bit desktop). But downloading the absolutely latest drivers did the trick!

The drivers are here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html - Small warning: You might need to manually uninstall the drivers shipped with Ubuntu first.

I recommend that you try this. But of course we would like to see 180.29 included in 9.04. :-)

I tried 173, 177 and 180.29 on 9.04

I havent tried 180.29 on 8.10 though. But I'm more interested in running 9.04 at this stage.

Hi,

Today April 19th 2009, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 RC and the problem remains the same.
After installing the NVIDIA Driver for my GeForce 6100, I reboot the machine. When GDM starts, I have a Black Screen with "a two pixel line" on the top of my LCD Screen.

The only solution I have, is to return back to my Hardy 8.04.
Is this problem related to Xorg or to the NVIDIA driver ?

Thanks

Options, go back down to 8.04, wait till a fix comes from someone some day, switch to Red Hat, or Windows xp. Reminds me of the days with Fourth and CPM.

apparently, i did not quite remove all the modules. even tho the nvidia driver compiles the kernel module, apparently it doesn't get used unless the other modules are removed. running 'apt-get remove --purge nvidia*' beforehand did the trick. i now have 185.18.04 installed. however, i still cannot use 1280x1024 resolution. the monitor supports that mode. it is a dell 1901fp and i was using that mode in ms windows. the only thing i see above that i haven't tried is starting with ubuntu 8.04 and upgrading to 8.10 and then 9.04?? how ridiculous ;) i'm not going to do that. is that really necessary? there is obviously something related to nvidia/xorg that is in place on ubuntu 8.04 that doesn't get wiped away due to the upgrade process, i would guess. isn't there a way to force 1280x1024 in xorg.conf or something? this seems so simple...
