Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The fix mentioned has been incorporated in mainline kernel since v2.6.29.

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Marking this Fix Released for Karmic 9.10 since it will target the 2.6.31 kernel and has most recently be rebased with the 2.6.31-rc2 upstream kernel. Images are currently available for testing - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Thanks.

uhm... same problem here too. I also bought an external mic, but this issue
is painful when you can't keep everything with you (external mics
included), e.g. in conferences...

I think, dear Jam, we have to wait for long, since it's a well known bug and
there's no sign of interest in fixing it.

and this for BASS (tuba), which is definitely a secondary problem BTW:

I have an Acer TravelMate 5730. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 but cannot record sound from either an external microphone or the internal microphone, all I hear is static. I have tried recording in the 'Sound Recorder' and also in 'Cheese'. As a Linux newbie I would like to be informed of a simple resolution to this issue. I really do not want to regress to Windows 7!

Added self as affected - Ubuntu 9.10 on Acer TravelMate 8100. Internal audio appears in System Prefences/Sound/Hardware (analog stereo duplex) but the levels indicator, and Sound Recorder, only show even noise. Some success with external USB webcam mike.

Similar issue - using a Gateway Lt2005U (Acer is mother company of Gateway)
External Mic works fine
Internal Mic does not work well - if I adjust sound settings to amplify @ 100% and then record I can get something @ low quality.
I'm not a developer/expert by anymeans - but please let me know if theres any other info I can provide to help with this.
