Bug Description

m7674n:~> echo $SHELL
/usr/bin/tcsh
m7674n:~> tcsh --version
tcsh 6.14.00 (Astron) 2005-03-25 (i486-intel-linux) options wide,nls,dl,al,kan,rh,nd,color,filec

m7674n:~> nice -n 10 nice
nice: Badly formed number.

I came across this when trying to lower the priority when using p7zip. I like using tcsh though it appears that nice doesn't like the shell. Works fine in sh. Not sure if I should be bothering the Astron folks or Unbuntu... Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in tcsh.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Note: The same problem occurs in the csh shell. More specifically this is the Package: csh (20070713-1) [universe] as a part of the hardy 8.04 set of software. Whatever is causing the problem it must be common between Package: tcsh (6.14.00-7) [universe] and the csh (something in the libc6?)...

Just following this up.

tcsh/csh have their own nice command build into the shell which take different parameters. From within tcsh/csh, you can access the 'normal' nice command using /usr/bin/nice which works fine. Here's a link to a similar discussion:

I think we should close this bug as it is not really a bug.

Mr. Broadhead,

Thanks for the information!

Yes, this should be closed...

Agreed, not a bug. tcsh built in nice command is just different.

Changed in tcsh:
