Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The standard word kerning on the Ubunbu Beta version of OO.org is just really bad. I would think this to be one of the basics that OO would work on but maybe they know something I don't.

Just type a few sentences in the default font and you'll see what I mean. It is bad.

When does the Liberty Fonts start to take over? That sounds like it was a mission of those fonts.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
Package: openoffice.org-core 1:2.4.1-9ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/lib/openoffice/program:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: openoffice.org
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-4-generic x86_64
UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

I think this may be related to the cairo 1.6.4 change that is mentioned in this bug report: bug 284491.

Do you still have this problem with the new version of OOo in the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive ?

And which font are you using by 'default' the default depends on what fonts you have installed on your system.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

I also experience problems with openoffice kerning. As I posted in http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=92159, kerning does not work for certain fonts: I copied calibri.ttf and Lucida Grande.ttf into my /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory, and for them kerning does not work.

It seems that this is a long standing issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=107324

GPOS kerning feature is supported since version 3x of Ooo, but works only with WIN OS but not with LINUX (tested on Ubuntu and Linux Mint) and both apps Openoffice and Libreoffice, that concerning fonts using GPOS kerning feature only.

Please refer to the #773207 about technical informations.

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

Johnny Proton, this is:
- a clearcut upstream issue. You are welcome to send this to the developers of the software by following the instructions at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport . If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status.
Resolving as Won't Fix in libreoffice (Ubuntu) and LibreOffice Packaging. This does not mean the issue will not be cared about, but if it is cared about (even by Ubuntu/Canonical contributors), it is done upstream at LibreOffice.
