Bug Description

I have been getting IMs with unreadable text, but a link to various websites in Russia ( www.xxxx.ru). I have set pidgin to allow only messages from those on my buddy list. It appears to work, but at some point I will get another of these messages and when I check my preferences, it is reset to block only from the block list. I have been unable to post a bug with the pidgin project as the support site keeps timing out. I am using the latest Ubuntu package, "1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1". I am surprised that I was unable to find any discussion of this issue when I Googled it. This is a very critical matter. I have been getting these unwanted IMs for over a week. Others must be seeing this also. It is an obvious exploit. The difficulty in reporting this to the pidgin project is also disturbing and does not speak well of their professionalism.

What protocol (AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc.)?

On the second half of this: Reporting this to your distro first is the correct thing to do anyway. The Pidgin site is down right now because of issues relating to server migration. It's suboptimal, but it'll be fine soon, really.

Thanks Richard,

I replied to the email notice, but I have not seen it show up yet, so I'll repeat myself.

I am using AIM. I've shut down Pidgin until I can get another system put together for work.

I'm glad to here that the Pidgin dev site is not responsive due to upgrades :) I am old fashioned and tend to think that the project should deal with issues and not the distro. I have to remember how sophisticated the organizations behind some distros have become. With the time and effort Canonical has put in their product, it makes sense that they should get the first bug report.

thx bob

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.
