Bug Description

Binary package hint: ogmrip

At the end of the encoding process, after hours of work, an error box appears that states:

"Unknown error while merging
Please, check http://ogmrip.sf.net to see if this is a known issue."

I've tried a couple different settings, and each time it gives the same error at the end. This is while running OMGrip 0.11.1 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, and pulling info off a DVD.

ogmrip 0.11.1-0.1ubuntu1
ogmtools 1:1.5-2.1

I have the same problem, even with the newest version (0.12.2) installed directly from sourceforge.

As far as I can tell, this is a duplicate of bug #288818. Or vice versa.

I too get this issue. It only seems to happen with H.264 with MP4 container. I get H264 fine if I use MKV (but using MKV isn't always ideal)

Thanks for the report. Could you please enable the log in preferences and attach the log file to this bug report ? There is not enough information for searching a solution.

I experienced this problem also, when attempting to encode a movie using H.264 in an mp4 container (if I recall correctly). It should be reproducible with this configuration. It appears to be a buffer overrun bug in MP4Box, which is picked up by apparmor I think. It might not cause a crash when not running arrarmor. I tried the latest MP4Box but the problem persists. Here is a crash report:

I just realised now, I should have added that for me, I'm getting the error in Jaunty (and previously Intrepid)

Thanks for the log. It's strange because I can't see any error in the log. If you try to launch ogmrip in a terminal, could you paste the output of the terminal when the error appear please ?

@sam.watkins
Could you also paste the log produce by this encoding ?
Thanks.

When I glanced through it I thought I noticed no error, but thought I was perhaps looking in the wrong place. Here's a text of the terminal output from the start.

I'll prepare a new package with this patch so you can test it.

Could you please add this line to your sources.list : deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gilir/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
Install the ogmrip package with version 0.12.2-0.0ubuntu4~ppa2 when it'll appear in the repository
Test with the new package.

Thanks.

Alas, it still throws up the same error (terminal output enclosed). Although now the progress bar for merging actually moves (whereas it didn't before) before it shows the error. Also new is that the log now includes "Converting to ISMA Audio-Video MP4 file..." at the end but still no note of the error.

As I said, terminal output attached (seems mostly the same, but what do I know ;) ?)

Can you please try again, this time with 'Do not remove temporary files' checked in the Preferences dialog ? After the error, go to the temporary directory (/tmp), and run the following commands:

$ mencoder -nocache -noskip -mc 0 -nosound -ovc copy -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4 -o video.mp4 video.XXXXXX
$ MP4Box -isma -nodrop -new -brand mp42 -add video.mp4:fmt=h264:fps=25#video -add audio.XXXXXX:fmt=aac:lang=eng:#audio -chap chapters.XXXXXX movie.mp4

where XXXXXX should be replaced by the extension of the temporary files.

Does one of these commands fail ? Can you copy/paste the output of the one that fails ?

Thank you very much,

Olivier

Compiling gpac with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0 should solve the problem.

@Gerard Davidson
I packaged a version of gpac with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0. It's in my PPA for jaunty (https://launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/ppa). Could you please test with this package ( gpac - 0.4.4-0.3ubuntu4~ppa1) ?
Thanks.

Ok I've updated to that package of gpac but haven't yet tested it -- the last update left the system hanging on power management when starting up so I'm in the process of fixing that.

Ok I've finally fixed the other system issues. SO... I have bad news and good news.

The bad news is I still get "Unknown error while merging...".

The good news is it works anyway :p (at least when used with (A)SP). It shows up the error message but in spite of it, a perfectly playable mp4 file is created. Although for some reason now I'm getting an error "extracting video stream" when using X.264.

It may be just the DVD I'm using so I'll try another and see what happens

Thanks for the tests. I'll be interesting if you can test with another DVD.

Latest update yields same result. Merging is okay, but reports an error anyway. Encoding using x264 still doesn't work. I'll post a terminal output when I get a chance

We can't investigate more without the log files. Also, there is now a 0.13 version of ogmrip and a gpac 0.4.5 version (available on Karmic or on Jaunty using my PPA https://launchpad.net/~gilir/+archive/updates). Please test with them to see if the bug is fixed. If not, please re-open the bug report with a log file.

I am using Precise, Linux MInt and have a problem when encoding a DVD to a PC low quality videofile.
I have tested this on two different Intel computers with 64bits Mint versions.
Both the same result, also with different DVD's. At this end it tries to merge files and then the error appears: Unknown error while merging. Maybe is has problems with the 64 bits versions?
