Bug Description

I'm trying 8.10 beta on my new laptop. Not the installation, just the boot from cd.

After booting, I am presented with a white screen. Nothing in it. Just white. Not even the mouse pointer.
I killed kdm and launched startx myself, with the same result.

I'm sorry if I don't give you more info, but I'm no expert and this is the first time I file a bug...

I could reproduce the same effect on 8.04 (kubuntu) following this procedure:

1) normal boot
2) install binary driver with automatic procedure
3) setup desktop effect (works fine)
4) install 2.6.27-rc3
5) reboot with the new kernel

My (naive) guess is that something goes wrong when the desktop is configured to use 3d acceleration and the corresponding driver is not found.

I hope this helps.

I can do more tests if you have suggestions of course.

Thanks for your help,

Andrea.

I have just tested ubuntu-8.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and the problem still occurs.

Sorry, I gave up and moved to mandriva (which is fairly buggy too, but at least I doesnt' have the white screen :))

I upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 using "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" as the CD had the same white screen problem in it.

Now I can login to my desktop - for details go here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6129000&postcount=12
