Bug Description

I downloaded both ubuntu and kubuntu 8.10 beta (AMD64 versions) today and gave them a try.
My box is an Asus M2NPV-VM with integrated Nvidia Graphics (G-Force 6150) and two displays - a 1920x1200 Acer P243w connected on DVI-D and a 1280x1024 Benq FP931 connected on VGA.
The CD boots, but when I want to use the installer or the live CD, even if I start in safe graphics mode, the Acer is black and the Benq displays a mangled pixel salad.
I am sorry I don't have more feedback than this. If you need me to test / report something more, let me know.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and your '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' file as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

Additionally, this may be a duplicate of bug 210340 - where the Live CD does not work with dual monitors.

Thank you for replying.

How do I access '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' and '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' on a machine to which I don't have a prompt on the screen?

I looked at <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277724">bug 277724</a> as well, which is linked from bug 210340 that you mention. Unlike that case, I was not able to install 8.10beta even if I disconnected my second display (the 1280x1024). The process hanged at a line saying something about bluetooth. I have no bluetooth on that box.

I'll have physical access to that box again next Wednesday or Thursday. I can run whatever diagnostic you ask me to run. It boots with Knoppix 5.1.1 (though the two displays show the same 1024x768 screen). It used to work with Ubuntu 8.04, but I have wiped out that partition. I can try to reinstall it if it is of help.

sorry I was slower to get the attached information. I recovered an old drive with 8.04.1 and plugged it into the box, reconfigured X with sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-org and run a few tests.

general procedure:
- booted 8.04.1 in recovery mode
- run xfix from the recovery menu
- continue startup
- if the x display was scrambled, used CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console
- sometimes even the console was scrambled. cycling once through
  CTRL+ALT+F1 CTRL+ALT+F2 CTRL+ALT+F3 CTRL+ALT+F4 and then again CTRL+ALT+F1
  brought it back
- copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to a new folder
- changed physical display connections
- rebooted and restarted the procedure

I did this three times, with three configurations.

display0: 1920x1200 Acer P243w
display1: 1280x1024 Benq FP931

folder first:
- display0 on DVI, display1 on VGA
- result: display0: scrambled colors, display1: black

folder second:
- display1 on DVI, display 0 on VGA
- result: display0: black, display1:scrambled colors

folder manual:
- display0 on DVI, nothing on VGA
- result: 1280x1024 on display0
- only xorg.conf saved in manual/xorg.conf.single.1920.dvi

The I used nvidia-settings. It recognized properly the two displays and set them up at the right resolution. I did tweak a few settings manually and stored xorg.conf.nvidia in folder manual.

My Box has 6GB RAM. 512MB are used by the G-Force 6150.

Hello,

updating my 8.04.1 the other day messed up completely my setting. It now only runs in reduced graphics mode, and the keyboard is also messed up (US Keyboard layout instead of the one that I had in my xorg.conf).

Does this have anything to do with the dropped nVidia auto-config support? and the fact that xorg.conf no longer exist in 8.10?

Hi ubuntu08,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

hello, I have attached the Xorg.0.log file. what does it take to change the status from incomplete? will I be able to use the nvidia proprietary driver with X?

/var/log/Xorg.0.log has been attached. has anybody noticed? is changing the status the only way to get attention? no intention to be rude, just trying to understand how this thing works

upgraded to 9.04. the upgrade downgraded my displays to be unusable (one was saying frequency out of range and the other was black). The solution was to disconnect one of the displays, reboot, activate the proprietary driver and re--do the whole configuration. Not a pleasant user experience. There is always a reason why a user choses to use a particular driver and/or configuration and it is annoying to see it reverted and reset to an inferior default.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
