Bug Description

Binary package hint: quodlibet

This project has been released as 2.0. It's got a new build system, and most important, it allows multiple audio backends.

The developer would like this 2.0 build to get out into the wild quickly to fix any possible regressions. I'd like to see this in Ubuntu, if nothing else then as a separate quodlibet2 package; unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be in Debian yet.

Mailing list post from Quod Libet Developer:

"Quod Libet 2.0 is the first release in the Quod Libet 2 branch, which
includes many improvements to the architecture of Quod Libet, as well
as a new distutils-based build and test system to ease frequent
releases.

Quod Libet 2 undoubtedly contains many bugs and regressions,
especially in performance and threading code. Most of those systems
date back to earlier versions of GTK+ and GStreamer and things have
subtly changed. Please use the new issue tracker at
http://code.google.com/p/quodlibet/issues/list to report any problems
you find and post patches for existing problems. There is a new dialog
that will pop up with a file to submit along with your bug report, if
you find a crash.

New releases in the 2.x branch will come as necessary, depending on
how many bugs are found and which

Operating system distributors, please update your packages as soon as
possible. Although Quod Libet 2.0 may have regressions in unknown
areas, it does fix many problems commonly reported to distributions'
bug trackers. It will also help us find these unknown regressions
faster.

Unfortunately, I really don't see this getting into the Intrepid release. We are well past Feature Freeze, and the Beta has already been release. It's just too late to get this in. While it fixes some bugs, it is a major change. At this point in the development cycle, known bugs are better than potential unknown ones. It will have to wait for Jaunty I imagine.

(Note: This might sound a bit too official, but I'm in no position to make decisions. This is just my opinion.)

If anyone's interested, I managed to get a build of this together, and have put the Intrepid packages in my PPA in case anyone else would find them useful. This is utterly unofficial, unsupported, and virtually untested, although it has been working for me for the past day or so. I basically tried to figure out the changes made to the version 1 source to debianize it and have tried to apply those here. Some directories & stuff have changed, so things like plugins, etc. required a little tweaking to work. I also downloaded the latest unstable Debian source package for the plugins (which appear to actually have been authored by Debian? or perhaps just collected by...) and fixed the directories in that to work with the other pkgs. My PPA is:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jsteinhart/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jsteinhart/ubuntu intrepid main

The packages are quodlibet, quodlibet-ext, quodlibet-plugins, and exfalso.
