Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10
Kernel: 2.6.27-4

After installing the new kernel and getting rid of the old one I cannot see any wireless connections. I am using an intel pro wireless card ipw3945. I guess there is a problem with the driver...

Here is the code:

# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:""
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=0 dBm
          Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

# iwlist eth1 scanning
eth1 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

# ifconfig eth1 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

so I did # dmesg
....
[ 69.554964] iwl3945 0000:0c:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
[ 69.555121] iwl3945 0000:0c:00.0: restoring config space at offset 0x1 (was 0x100102, writing 0x100106)
[ 69.557193] firmware: requesting iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode
[ 69.576661] iwl3945: iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode firmware file req failed: Reason -2
[ 69.576669] iwl3945: Could not read microcode: -2
[ 69.576790] iwl3945 0000:0c:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
...

and finally # ls -1 /lib/firmware/$(uname -r)/iwl*
ls: cannot access /lib/firmware/2.6.27-4-generic/iwl*: No such file or directory

It seems I am missing the driver or what... But it should be in the kernel already, should it not? Since I installed 7.10 it was working fine with the intel driver and than 8.04 was using already the linux driver iwl3945 and besides the led everything was fine... Thanks

Hi trautenberg,

Care to try installing linux-restricted-modules-common to see if this helps. It should contain the firmware. Thanks.

Hi Leann.

I have just installed linux-restricted-modules-common and rebooted, however I got precisely the same errors :( no progress... Did I miss something?

Thanks

Hi... I have updated today - it was many things, hence I do not know which one was it-most probably the restricted modules (even if there are no listed, when I search them). Anyway, it is fixed somehow - I am writing this from home. I am sorry, if I bothered anybody with that...

Thanks

I'm also experiencing this problem on an X61s Thinkpad running intrepid updated on about last Friday. linux-restricted-modules-common does not contain the firmware (and in fact does not contain any modules at all as far as I can see:

By forcing the latest update of 2.6.27.10 for linux-restricted-modules and linux-image, my iwl3945 started working again. I was originally having the same issues that it wouldn't even start

iwl3945 0000:0c:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

but now by forcing the update, it works well.

As of yesterday's Intrepid updates, it is working ok for me.
