Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-selector

Im using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex updated to 25 September 2008

when i run gnome-language-selector it says to me I have some language packages not installed yet, and he suggests me to install them. But when i click "install" button, he asks me the password, i type it correctly, it appears the "checking available language support" window and then it doesen't do anything else instead of installing missing packages.

works for me... which language did you encounter this with?

Also, do you have internet connection when trying to install the missing
packages?

I don't try to install some new language, when I run the language-selector
it asks me if I want to complete the installation of some partially
installed language (i.e. italian, used as default, and english). I have no
other language installed.

Yes, I'm sure it was connected when i tried to install the packages.

How do you know that it doesn't do anything? Do you get this message every time you start language-selector?

What should happen is: install the language-pack-{gnome|kde}-$lang paackages if they are missing, depending on if you have Gnome or KDE or both applications installed.

You can check if those packages are installed with:
dpkg -l language-pack-gnome-it
dpkg -l language-pack-kde-it

The missing packages are language-pack-kde-{en|it} and
language-pack-kde-{en|it}-base and I'm sure they are not installed (i run
the commands you suggested me in the previous message).

I know that it doesn't do anything because it should appear the synaptic's
window showing you it is downloading and installing the packages, but after
i type the correct password, it doesn't do anything for some seconds (3-4
sec.) and then appears the "checking available language support" window,
instead of the synaptic's one. After this the "Language support" window is
already opened and the missing packages aren't installed because if I close
the program and i run it again it shows me the same missing packages.
