Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution allows to save attachments only. On Hardy, the drop down box when clicking on an attachment allowed me to open it with the associated application(s) - this doesn't work on Intrepid right now.

Thanks for the report, that works fine for me , with which type of file are you having the issue? may you tell us a few steps in order to reproduce the bug? are you using IMAP? Which version of evolution are you running?

I checked it and it works with every file type except PDF - Evolution says "unknown file type" on PDF files. I'm on IMAP and use Evolution 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 on Intrepid.

Having both evince 2.24.0-ubuntu1 and acroread 8.1.2.su1-0.0medibuntu3 installed.

Works fine for me, can you reproduce the same with another new user created on your system?

I did some more tests. It only happens with some PDFs and ZIP-files only - not with every PDF/ZIP-file but maybe with other attachments as well, since it's sporadic.

And it happens on new accounts, also (tested inside a guest-session).

What do you need in order to reproduce it? Is a forwarded email ok?

could you attach a file example to the bug?

Ok, here's an example email - had to search awhile to find something non-private ...

Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

the example you attached has "Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Anfahrt.pdf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64", the mimetype application/octet-stream has no associated application that's why there is nothing listed to open it, the mailer used there is buggy but evolution could probably try to be smarter about those

Steffen Rusitschka (rusi) wrote :

Thing is: this happens pretty often - and I'm sure it worked on Hardy ... Maybe Evolution checked for the PDF extension and guessed the mime type in case of "application/octet-stream" before Intrepid?

This happens to me as well (Ubuntu 8.10, Evolution 2.24.1). Some but not all pdf attachments can only either be saved, or opened with "Remote Desktop Viewer" (which then obviously results in an error). Other pdfs open without problem, and all pdfs opened without problem in 8.04 on the same machine.

Just to add, I now also received a Word-file with the same problem as above; it can only either be saved, or opened with "Remote Desktop Viewer" (which then obviously results in an error).

This happens to me with many types of attachments - pdf, pps, doc, wmv. Sometimes it will work, then other days it doesn't.

Hi Sebastien,
Do you know when can we expect to have an ubuntu fixed package? Or how can we find out when it is going to be released?
Cheers

I'm using Intrepid and have this bug. Do we have to reopen the bug?

I also never had this problem in Hardy. It started happening the day I upgraded to Intrepid.

OK, I will open a new bug even the symptoms are the same.
I have checked the attachments that do not open and they have the mime
type
application/octet-stream just like in the bug 273736.

I'm running 32bit Jaunty and still experience this bug. Nothing seems to open, all I get is the option to save the file. Thanks! Ric
