Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I installed Thunderbird version 2.0.0.16+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 using Adept, but when I try to run it, it always throws up this error:

"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system."

Neither option is valid. Thunderbird is NOT running and restarting doesn't seem to do anything.

I installed thunderbird-gnome-support, but I still get the same message when I try to start Thunderbird.

I have exactly the same behavior on a fresh install of Ubuntu Intrepid.
Thunderbird lauched correctly only once, then became unusable.
Installing thunderbird-gnome-support changed nothing.
Tried to remove, purge and reinstall thunderbird package but the problem still persist.

did you reboot in between? Maybe you are using a nfs home partition?

I had exactly the same problem. My solution was to check the alphanumeric foldername (xxxxxxxx.default) in the /home/username/.mozilla-thunderbird folder. I discovered I had appended the word "NEW" to the 8 character.default name during a file transfer from another computer. Once I removed "NEW" from the folder name, all returned to normal.

its it solved by right clicking on the .mozilla-thunderbird map/folder:change the owner-rights on the map and all other maps in the folder. its really simple. i had exactly the same problems.

hmm last too comments didnt really sound "valid"

anyone seeing this, check whether you have proper permissions everywhere
in .mozilla-thunderbird folder.

My 'solution' was similar - the profile I was using was on a drive that was not mounted at boot. As soon as I mounted it Thunderbird worked fine.
