I ran the code as requested and received this:

mike@mike-desktop:~$  bash alsa-info.sh
bash: alsa-info.sh: No such file or directory

Jan:

I fixed the problem by installing a sound card and bypassing the installed chip.  I have heard that some chips are not really audio chips, instead they use Windows itself for sound... so no Windows no sound.

Do you know if that is true?

No, a sound chip is a sound chip. There are chips which are only usable in windows maschines, because there are only (fully) usable using windows because of driver issues. However, it would be really nice if you could provide the output requested by "Mackenzie Morgan, using the soundcard which you tried to use when you reported the problem " . That's important for the debugging process.
