Bug Description
Hi,
I'm doing a first time install and I'd like to put Ubuntu 8.04 to my (larger) second drive since there is plenty of room there. When I boot into Ubuntu from the CD, everything seems to work except it won't recognize the second hard drive. I don't see it in the file browser or the partitioner.
My primary drive is: Seagate ST3120026AS 114439 MB SATA NTFS
My Second drive is : Seagate ST3400633AS 381552 MB SATA NTFS
The drive is known to be in good working order since I can access it from WinXP.
I am running a Dell XPS Gen 2, Intel P4 3GHz, 2 GB SDRAM
I read the other postings but none seemed to address this. Thanks very much for your help!!!

It appears that Ubuntu doesn't recognize the drive.

Hi john,
You say that you can access the second drive from win XP, But not recognized
for ubuntu. First of all, download a program called "Partition Manager", and
change that (large disk) hard drive's partition to fat 32X, and make it
bootable. Secondly, make sure your jumpers are set to "Master". Next, make
sure your second disk (smaller disk)is partitioned the same way, and set
your jumpers to "Slave". Install Ubuntu from cd, but make sure the CD is the
first boot item in the bios. Ubuntu should now recognize both drives, and
actually installs and partitions both drives, so you can use your second
drive as a storage or backup drive.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dan,
Sorry it has taken me a while to respond. I've done what you requested. I
downloaded Ubuntu 8.10, created and booted from the .iso image disk and ran
gparted.
The results are no different than before - I can only see the first drive
/dev/sda (and it's two partitions). I cannot see the other drive (which has
the room to install Ubuntu). I am puzzled as to why Windows can see it but
Ubuntu can't. What could be THAT different?
Thanks for trying - your follow-up thoughts appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I downloaded and tried once again, no luck - same as prior version. It was
worth the try though.

This may be a stupid question, but since Ubuntu sees only 1 hard drive, could it be that there really is only 1 hard drive, since Windows recognizes different partitions and displays them as separate drives, i.e. is there physically 2 hard drives in the machine and have you ever checked this?
summary: |
- Ubunto not recognizing second hard drive + SATA drive not recognized |
affects: | ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu) |
JohnnyK (jkotrosa) wrote : Re: [Bug 272360] Re: Ubunto not recognizing second hard drive | #17 |
Teej,
Thanks for the reply... There are no stupid questions. You make an
excellent point, however, there really are two physical hard drives:
My primary drive is: Seagate ST3120026AS 114439 MB SATA NTFS
My Second drive is : Seagate ST3400633AS 381552 MB SATA NTFS
Both are Seagate, and SATA with NTFS formatting but different capacities.
Cheers,
John

Thanks for the reply John. Can you test this with the latest Live CD of Lucid (beta 2 later today hopefully) and let us know if both hard drives show in 'Computer' and also by doing 'sudo fdisk -l'. If they don't both show up, then two things will need to be done:
1) Run 'apport-collect 272360' and allow it to 'Change Anything' so it will upload debugging information automatically to this bug report.
2) The Mainline kernel will need to be installed and tested, full instructions are at https:/
Since you are using Karmic 9.10 there should be no problems with the Mainline Kernel.
Of course, if both of the hard drives show up, then this has already been fixed in Lucid :)

Teej,
Here is the result of running the fdisk
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14589 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x9dc96e9e
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 4 32098+ de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 * 5 14589 117154012+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
As you can see the second drive is not present.
Thanks for trying.

No worries. Sorry we weren't able to help you, though in future with any linux please try to provide as much information, both general information and debugging information as possible (usually somewhere on the wiki), as it really does help find the root of the problem and makes it that much easier for bugs to be fixed. Good luck and thank you for reporting this to us. :)
