Bug Description

There seems to be something wrong with Firefox on my system, and I've seen it happening now for at least a couple of weeks on my Ubuntu Hardy laptop (even when the power is plugged in). This might be related to bug #131094 but I think it might be different.

Essentially, without warning, Firefox will stop being responsive, and I see from my System Monitor applet that I/O goes to 100% (but not really any significant CPU usage). I can still switch to other programs, only Firefox is unresponsive. It remains unresponsive for 15-30 seconds before eventually coming back to life. I have 4 GB of ram and plenty of spare disk space, and a fast current-model CPU.

I have the AdBlock Plus plug-in installed, plus the standard Ubuntu customisations.

Cheers
JP

I checked the the AdBlock Plus developer and he hadn't heard of or seen this problem; he suggest that I could use Venkman to try to work out what Firefox was doing at this point, but didn't think I'd have much luck with that.

Hi John,

I'm reassigning this to firefox for now. If you entire system would lock up I'd blame the kernel, but if it's just Firefox at the moment, I'm suspecting it's related directly to the app. Please take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?action=show&redirect=DebuggingFirefox . Additionally, you might want to try the latest Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha5 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing to verify if this issue will exist in the upcoming release. Thanks.

Hi Leann

Does this mean that you've filed a bug on Mozilla Bugzilla?

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest firefox version? Thanks in advance.

I have switched to Shiretoko (via an Ubuntu PPA) and haven't seen this problem in the newer version.

I would imagine the problem still exists on Firefox 3.0 though. Unfortunately, none of the methods suggested by Leann seemed to point to a way of isolating this I/O problem, so I didn't attempt any. Noone else has seen this?

This bug hasn't been updated for some time. Can you confirm if this is a problem in 10.10? Thank you.
