Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On the GDM login screen, when my laptop is connected to the docking station with an external screen, the laptop screen remains on. Also, the resolution on the external screen is too low. Fortunately, when I log in, the laptop screen switches off, and the external output is set to the correct native resolution of the external screen (after an annoying sequence of 6 switch on/off of the external output).

This is not a xserver-xorg-video-intel problem since it works after you log in. The problem is caused by the lack of dynamic display configuration support in the packaged GDM (2.20). A new version is being developed with support for dynamic configuration, but it is not clear which version will be included in GNOME 2.24:

thank you for your bug report, the GNOME report pointed indicates that the current ubuntu gdm version should handle the situation correctly, that seems rather an xorg issue

Hi emmanuel-pacaud,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

The bug is still there using current karmic. I've seen on a fedora 11 box there's an access to the screen configuration dialog from gdm. Could it be a workaround for this issue ?

On a side note, it breaks badly the quality of the visual boot experience, as seen on the attached screenshot (which show the worst case, usually I get the gdm wallpaper tiled with 1024x768 tiles on a 1280x1024 screen).

Hi Emmanuel,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 269302

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 269302 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

it's still there in a final lucid installation.

If I recall correctly, it used to work for a while during lucid development. But not anymore.

I've tried to do "apport-collect 269302", but it failed saying "no additional informations were collected" with the following message on the console:

"Package xorg-server not installed and no hook available, ignoring".

If it can help, there is no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.
