Bug Description

udev (?) is failing to create /dev/fd0, and as a result of this, floppy drives
fail to work.
I have access to about a dozen systems with this problem, one with all available
updates (which i have been doing my investigation on), the others not up to date
yet.
The directory /dev/fd/ is created.
Im not sure where to go to debug this, so i will check back as often as possible
to get any info you might need.

Please provide dmesg output from your kernel, it's more likely that your floppy
drive simply hasn't been detected and the right driver isn't loaded yet.

The /dev/fd/ directory is a directory of file descriptors for your process, it
isn't related to floppy devices.

When booting up Breezy, the fd should be autodetected. In my case, every time, and on a number of p4 computers with ooddles of ram, the fd is not autodetected. This is a annoyance. To fight the domination of microsoft, and for those migrating from windows, it is important to get the distro right.

Floppy device creation is done somewhat differently for dapper, please try a Flight 4 Dapper Live CD where you should find that it's been fixed.

If not, Please provide the output of "ls /sys/bus/pnp/devices" and "cat /sys/bus/pnp/devices/*/id" from the Dapper Live CD.

I'm getting a similar problem on Dapper, along with bug 27926 (multiple entries in fstab). As this bug is marked "fixed" and applies to Breezy, I'll raise a new bug on Dapper.

OK - raised as Bug 34359. Not sure if I should have done it though - I thought I was raising a bug specifically against Dapper but it seems all bugs on (say) udev get lumped together under launchpad/distributions/ubuntu/udev. Still haven't got the hang of Launchpad/Malone.
