Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in compiz.

Anyway I did not notice that behavior on Intrepid, but I did not try visual effects on intrepid with this hardware.

I am getting this upside down mirror effect on graphics and menus when logging in using XDMCP remote login, from one 9.04 machine to another 9.04 machine, one is using ext4 and the other ext3? Compiz is running on both. I didn't have this issue with earlier versions. It's just like this lifehacker article, and I thought I was being hacked for a second: http://lifehacker.com/190441/turn-your-wifi-piggybackers-internet-upside-down

My Dell GX620 with an Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) is running Ubuntu 9.10 LTSP Client. The LTSP LDM logon screen comes up fine when I allow X to automatically select and configure the driver. However, when I logon - which starts a remote X session to the host computer - the text and images that make up the GUI are flipped upside down.

To be more exact. The icons, characters, and background image are all flipped 180 degrees along the X (left to right) axis. The horizontal menu item relationships and the order of characters in the menu labels are correct. The vertical menu items are displayed in reverse order although functionally they work as if they were displayed correctly. For example, second menu item listed under Applications is System Tools (with upside down letters), but when you place the mouse pointer over the second menu item under Applications the Games menu appears. When you place the mouse pointer over the next to last menu item under Applications the System Tools menu appears.

For the LTSP client mirrored screen, see this bug, it's because of the proprietary drivers on the server:

Nvidia drivers & related software (nvidia configurators)

change settings for Intel drivers. And so tell the xorg-intel

For all NONE-Nvidia PCs, easy to fix:

If you have "simple-ccsm" (Simple Compizconfig settings

manager) installed:

(if not install "ccsm" or "compizconfig-settings-manager")

1st right-click on your PC Desktop, use <Tab> to select,

left-click on "Change Desktop Background".

Use <Tab> again & select "Visual Effects" tab,

use <Tab> key once again & select "None".

(Upside down & mirrored is difficult to read or select by

mouse. <Tab> will indicate where you are in a menu).

The Desktop will right itself.

Then use "Synaptic Package Manager"

(or the Terminal, for those who know how) & purge

all Nvidia programs, refresh (apt-get update),

& it may be a good idea to reinstall your particular

Video card software which will set configuration

back to where it should have been. Then restart "compiz"

& select your level of Visual Effects. Problem solved!

Perhaps the Ubuntu Masters may build a fail-save,

so that wrong video info can not corrupt configs.

I am sure, that this is a config corruption, where none Intel drivers
interfere with normal graphics setup.

The below solution worked for some of us!

I usually delete any other video card drivers other than my own card.

*Purge* (which also deletes the config) all other xorg drivers except for
vesa and framebuffer.

Purge and reinstall the xorg Intel driver.

To be save purge compiz as well.

Then reboot and see if this worked.

This is how it looks for me (see attachment), i have to alt-f2 "metacity --replace" to turn of compiz on startup.
I purged the intel drivers but it's still the same.

I can confirm that I have this problem on a Samsung N150 pine trail laptop (Intel graphics chipset).
Since all new accounts are set up with normal (metacity) visual effects they all suffer from this graphical corruption. Logging in with a Gnome Failsafe session allows you to disable visual effects on an individual basis, but earlier in the thread Alkis mentioned LTSP and in a posting on their forum provided a command line workaround that solves the issue for all users:

sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity

Perhaps there is more than one bug responsible.

Again I ran Lucid-alpha, now alpha-3. Karmic is also installed, in case
something goes wrong with Lucid.

My Intel g35 integrated video with Asus mobo and dual-core Cpu, ran just
fine.

Until I looked for ways to tweak the video to get higher resolutions. I
accidentally installed *nvidia* software, and after a reboot eveyrthing was
upside down and mirrored.

I booted into Karmic to do some research about Intel & nvidia drivers and
apps, and it told me, that installing nvidia software on a Intel video
system would corrupt the Intel video configuration.
So, to fix this corruption, I *purged all nvidia related software first*,
(that is after changing compiz settings to no visual effects)

Then I purged the Intel drivers and configuration. Reinstalled Intel fresh.
And to be save, I also purged compiz, and then freshly reinstalled compiz.
After this I set compiz to desired visual effects, and all was good, from
then on!

Now when I install newer Lucid, I purge all other video related drivers and
software, that could possibly corrupt Intel video, except for the vesa
driver, for it is a fail-safe fallback. Why have Ati, nvidia, and so on,
drivers and software installed if it is not needed?

Even in the Microsoft world nvidia is very peculiar & particular about other
video drivers being present, and nvidia also interferes with Intel video.
I am not a programmer nor am I advanced in Linux, but I am always learning.
Hope this may have helped those who run karmic or lucid, perhaps older linux
may also be affected, I do not know about older OSs, Tim Towers solution may
work better.

This is caused by having the nvidia proprietary drivers installed. They replace libGL with a version that doesn't work for Intel (or radeon), and produces the strange inverted display you see.

If you haven't deliberately installed the nvidia drivers then this was probably caused by a bug in a previous version of the mplayer packaging, which would incorrectly cause the nvidia drivers to be installed.
