Bug Description

Using Hardy 8.0.4.1 64bit Desktop - kernel 2.6.24-19-generic.
PC has two DVD/CD drives, one is SATA, the other PATA/IDE. I've recently downloaded the new Intrepid ISOs for Ubuntu and Kubuntu and burnt them to CD.
Blank CDs in drive. The first time I burnt a CD by clicking on the ISO file (saved to desktop) and selected write to disk. The burn speed options were from 56.4x to 1.0x, so I selected 1.0x (similar to Disk speed2.png attached). The second CD displayed the disk speeds (shown in Disk speed2.png) but did not allow anything slower than 18.8x to be selected. The ISOs were moved to my /home directory.
In both cases the same PATA drive was used. If I select the ISOs from my home directory I get the options to burn CDs at 56.4x to 18.8x and DVDs at 6.2x to 2.0x every time.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
 * Did you use the same discs each time? Could you run /usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives after putting the CD in the drive?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Thanks for the reply. This error is reproducible. Since I last reported this problem things have got a little worse.
To recreate - put CDR in drive. Click on ISO file (Intrepid Beta) and select Wrirte to Disk. Use CDDVDW SH-S202J (Only drive listed). Use slowest speed CD:1.0x DVD:0.1x (see attached Initial-burn-speed.png). Starts to try to prepare disk but fails with error -select slower burn speed (see Error1.png). Close all windows. Now using new CD of same type again try to burn a CD from the ISO and new speed settings are displayed (see attached New-burn-speeds.png).
I've already raised a problem with one drive rebooting the PC when a DVD is inserted (see bug #258872) could this be related to this problem.
I also include a couple of log files. Dmesg at 25.013749s says Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods. How do I do this ? Kern.log says cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize! at the end.
I really would like to resolve this as I want to contribute to the Intrepid beta testing (I was able to burn CDs for Alpha6 Ubuntu and Kubuntu using my current configuration).
If I try to burn at other speeds I get Error1.png again. I can't burn any CDs at the moment (I'll reboot and see if this allows me to burn some CDs and get back to you).
How do I run list_cddrives ?

I can't burn CDs after a reboot as I still get an error (Error1.png).

I can burn ISO files in Windows XP on both drives using Infra Recorder. I've put the CDs in the other drive (from which I burnt them in each case) and CD disk integrity is fine. The fault must be a software (or configuration) problem.

your new comments are confusing and seem to be a different issue than the one described in the bug summary

Hi. To clarify. I originally was able to burn CDs, but depending on whether I had or had not previously burnt a CD (during the current session) I would get different speed options. Even though I can no longer burn CDs when using Ubuntu (has there been changes to the software between the initial report and now?) the options are the same. First time I attempt to burn a CD I get CD burn speeds down to x1. On further attempts I get burn speeds down to x18.8 and no lower. I've supplied these in the screenshots and logs file (this hasn't changed).
What has changed is that I can no longer burn CDs in Ubuntu, but I'm still able to burn them on either SATA drive in Windows XP.
This may be due to a software update, I have not reported damaged packages (according to apt-get install -f).
I've supplied the logs to help. The original logs weren't sent as I wasn't immediately aware of this problem.
Please advise as to what additional information is required and if I need to take any further action.
Thanks
Kevin.

you should open a new bug about cd recording not working now, does it working using other sofware or command line tools?

What I think is happening is that as I have two drives, Ubuntu is confused as to which one I want to use. Brasero 0.8.1 will work with one drive but not the same one as the nautilus-cd-burner (write to disk) program displays. Brasero does not see the other drive. Please but this bug report on hold or close it (I can always report it as a new bug later). I may raise new bugs on the errors in the dmesg.log later.
First I'll try removing one drive at a time and see what happens. Sebastien do I need to reconfigure any software when I do this ?
Thanks in advance
Kevin.

there is no need to reconfigure anything, devices are detected when booting
