Bug Description

I have all repositories enabled and first tried to open mp3 files with totem and if I remember correctly system should propose installing codecs, but this doesn't happen. Then I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras package, but I still get error in Totem ( Could not determine type of stream) and Rhythmbox (The GStreamer plugin to decode "MP3" files cannot be found). Here is piece of errors seen in terminal when launched Rhythmbox with -d option

[code](11:43:38) [0x1002bf88] [rb_metadata_bus_handler] rb-metadata-gst.c:833: got error message from apedemux0

I think this is quite serious bug if we are about have working Intrepid ps3 install disc soon. Amarok and other KDE application work fine with mp3's. Sorry I'm not sure where this report exactly should be, but I couldn't find this report anywhere else.

@xmbc would you consider taking responsibility for this? I really have my work cut out getting the kernel and install stuff sorted and probably won't get to desktop stuff.

Note if you're running any custom build of the kernel that could be why the restricted extras package isn't available. Hopefully we'll have a working (enough) kernel in the beta where we'll be able to confirm this issue for sure.

Cheers

Dan

Hi Dan. I'm currently using your latest kernel 2.6.25-2-powerpc64-smp with Intrepid (Gnome) on this issue (same with previous version of kernel). Actually ubuntu-restricted-extras does install, but gstreamer packages aren't found with Totem or Rhythmbox for some unknown reason. I also tried to install fluendo's mp3 package from repositories, but no go. I've tried to find information around net to solve this on my own, but I haven't found anything useful.

I'll notify immediately if I happen to figure out what's wrong, but I don't think I'm up to take responsibility of this issue as I consider my self too new linux user and l've been very occupied on work lately.

Btw I really hope your kernel gets to incoming Intrepid ISO's. It would really help installing Ubuntu on PS3.

Sorry for my not so great English skills

Ok got Bob Dylan blaring through my TV right now, and he got there via the magic of MP3 and Rhythmbox which auto-detected the MP3 format and helped me search for the correct driver (gstreamer ugly I think).

So I think we can call this solved. It was probably due to incomplete work on these packages in Ubuntu proper rather than a problem with the PS3 port.
