Myh problem was related to having disabled Wireless from Windows, so everytime ipw2200 was loading into kernel, i've recieved this message:

ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

I had to re-enable from windows to make it work perfect on Ubuntu.

I'm running 5.10 on a dv1000. Wireless button works just fine.

Wireless button does not work on my Acer Ferrari 4005 but I also have had other wireless problems. On load, both wireless card and lan are detected, but wireless config does not find my (unsecure) wireless network.
I can load Ubuntu with wired connection no problem, but then cannot configure wireless. Button does not work and no icon appears on screen to add WLAN0 or whatever, per instruction below.

Maybe I am doing it wrong, but there seems to be a problem.

Dennis,

I tried flight 6 but my wireless card lite did not illuminate. I don't
THINK it is my hardware, it works fine with xp so for what that is worth.

The led on dv1000 is disabled by default. You can enable wlan leds with the following command as root:

% echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/0000\:02\:06.0/led

This applies for dv1245ea which is of the dv1000 family. The led not being enable has no interference with radio kill switch operations. Since Flight6 ships with network-manager, it's easy to discover if the switch is on or off: if you see a network you have it on, otherwise it's off.

By default, the kill switch is off so after boot you have the ability to join any network you wish.

Susan, had you a dv1000 laptop it'd probably have an ipw2xxx card in it and you should be able to control the led state the way I mentioned. In an Acer Ferrari, with a Broadcomm card, I have no idea.

Yet, you can try to run the following command, while being at the /sys/bus/pci/drivers directory:

% find . -name '*led*'

If it prints anything, it will be the directory and the full name of the file. Before setting the flag to 1, check what flags you driver supports, if any.

I have a HP dv1240us. In my case, this command successfully enables the Kill switch button LED:
echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2200/0000\:01\:06.0/led
However, I would really prefer that the ipw2200 driver took care of enabling the LED automatically! This is the way it should work.

By the way, NetworkManager and the Kill switch work perfectly for me with Ubuntu 7.04, aside from the fact the the Kill switch LED doesn't come on whenever the Kill switch is disabled (e.g. the WIFI signal is ON).

greg@greg: -bash: /sys/bus/pci/drivers/bcm43xx/0000:06:06.0/led: Permission denied

then I log into root:

And I still got:

root@greg: -bash: /sys/bus/pci/drivers/bcm43xx/0000:06:06.0/led: Permission denied

any suggestions?

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
