Cannot add new mimetype handlers

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Cannot add new handlers for mimetypes - the edit->preferences->applications won't let me, no other way to do it.
Clicking on a file that is unknown results in the dialog box:
--------------------------------------------------
You have chosen to open

<filename>

which is a: <filetype>
from : <url>

[cancel] [save]
--------------------------------------------------

There is no option in the dialog to add the application in.
Is there any circumstances at all that would require a dialog box that is slightly less helpful than a dead herring?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

Hi there

It is still an issue - I am using 8.10. I've attached a screenshot of the
help-less dialog that pops up. I would also like to
reiterate that the bug is not "wrong dialog pops up", but rather "don't let
user add new mime-type handlers for firefox".
The dialog that does actually pop up has no possible use-case where it
should appear (which is why it annoyed me
so - what is it's purpose? I cannot think of any use-case where it could
possibly be useful).

(I've also tested this just now on the PC next to me, which is 9.04, and the
bug is still there)

Kind Regards
Lee
