Bug Description

KDE translation packages (kde-l10n-xx) are missing on Intrepid, as consequence, Kubuntu Intrepid cannot be translated to other languages different than English.

This bug is not present on Debian.

In the case of Intrepid, i think this is becouse kde-l10n packages are missing in repository, i have installed package kde-l10n-es from Debian and now my KDE 4.1.1 is translated into Spanish language in Kubuntu.

this is wired indeed, I had the same effects with german packages (alpha5) : when I installed the german language packages after the inital installation in english, I got a german hint , that I would have to restart an application to get an effect, but that was all - after closing system-settings all applications continue in english...

I tried the debian ones, (kde-l10n-de_4.1.1-1_all.deb) , and everything is ok.

Same in polish .

I can confirm the same with Intrepid on the Catalan translation. The only strings translated are those from KDE 3.

KDE 4 translations have not been imported to Ubuntu yet. They had some kind of strange problem with Rosetta and have to approve all changes manually. You can get more info here: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2008-September/001663.html

Now the question is... Why isn't this bug marked as critical? The Ubuntu Team is showing absolutely no interest in KDE nor localisation.

I hope we can get those packages updated for the final release (I already assume we won't have them in the beta). If not, maybe it'll be time to leave Kubuntu and search for another distribution who cares more about people who don't speak English and who don't use Gnome.

I have separate the original report in two different reports, then this report only affects Intrepid and KDE4 by the moment.
kde-i18n packages of KDE3 are now invalid for this report.
Nomination for Hardy can be revoked now from this bug.

I request this bug to be reopened. There ARE packages on Intrepid, but their translations are those from KDE 3. KDE 4 translations have not been successfully imported to Rosetta, therefore, there are only few strings translated on KDE 4.

While it is true that this affects all the KDE localisation packages, I would appreciate it if people could refrain from creating further tasks on this bug for each language. It doesn't gain us anything significant and it makes the release-critical bug list harder to read. Thank you.

Update from Stuart Bishop of Launchpad:

We had to abort the generation of language packs on production, as the
script was keeping a database lock open that was blocking parts of
Soyuz. I don't know if the open lock is a new issue, or an old issue
that soyuz only recently started caring about.

I have rebuilt the staging database, and am now running a language
pack export against it. The export process started at 07:47 UTC,
running on chokecherry under my userid. It is logging to
chokecherry:~stub/launchpad/intrepid.log.

I will need to rebuild it again with fresh data from production and do
the export again later this weekend to ensure we ship everything we
can. The current run will give us timings, confirm there are no
further glitches, and give us a backup option in case the final run
fails for some reason.

I am unsure as to exactly what time the deadlines are - I know it is
Sunday, but not sure when in what timezone. If someone can tell me
this, I'll be better able to schedule the final run.

The export was delayed by the problem described in bug 289037 but is now running (from the beginning) again on the staging database. It was started at 1000 UTC.

Except that version of the database is a bit too old, so we're going to resync staging and kick it off when that restore is done, which should be within 1.5h.

Assigning to Stuart Bishop, as he holds the baton until the language pack export is complete. Once it is done, this should be passed on to one of Martin Pitt or Arne Gotje to roll the new language packs.

From Stuart:

We resynced the staging database from production to bring in the kde
translations as discussed. This took longer than expected. The
database snapshot is from 1100UTC. The actual language pack export
process started at 1600 UTC. It seems to be running smoothly. I think
the Rosetta teams estimate for the run time is 9 hours, so 0100 UTC
Sunday. This job is process id 15143 on chokecherry.

A bug fix has been landed by the Rosetta team to avoid locking tables
until the end of the run. I've kicked off a second export using this
bug fix against the production database. This job started at 17:50 UTC.
ETA is 0300 UTC. This job is process id 20293 on chokecherry. I've
confirmed that this job is not locking the DistroSeries table, and it
doesn't hold any exclusive locks on any other tables so far either.

Any news of when Kubuntu(kde4) translation will be fixed entirely? (or at least what is KDE4).
