This happens to me as well, but only when the screens are set to the same resolution. Possibly when gnome-display-properties would show "mirror screens" as checked?

what do you do exactly to get the issue?

I actually was seeing it on my laptop with an external display.
External display at1920x1200 and internal display at 1280x800. When I
disconnected it from the external display the gnome-display-properties
window would come up and then hang (different issue I'm assuming).

For me, the crash (assuming it's the exact same one) happens when I have my laptop (Dell Latitude D620) in a port replicator, booted with an external monitor on the port replicator and also with the lid open.

Output of xrandr:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 2432 x 864
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 303mm x 190mm
   1280x800 60.0 +
   1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0*
   832x624 74.6
   800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
   720x400 85.0
   640x400 85.1
   640x350 85.1

The laptop built-in display is blank at this point. Running gnome-display-properties will crash. If I run xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800, the built-in display comes up (with the semi-expected panel sizing problems), and running 'gnome-display-properties' will work properly.

Oh, and if I then run 'xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768', the screen gets a pillarboxed 4:3 rectangle of grey (which I assume is 1024×768) and does not display the desktop. Running gnome-display-properties at this point will crash.

I actually got mine to work using res-applet. It detected the modes
properly, let me set the mode, and then I could open
gnome-display-properties.

gnome-display-properties crash when I plug for the first time a secondary screen on my Dell laptop and want to set its resolution. I have to unplug it, restart X, then launch gnome-display-properties (which works now), plug my screen and restart X again. After that, everything works fine...

I had gnome-display-properties crash on dual monitors. It works now, after putting this in /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default:

/usr/bin/xrandr --output VGA-0 --off
/usr/bin/xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1920x1200 --left-of VGA-0
/usr/bin/xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of DVI-0

The first --off was crucial, otherwise whole X server would crash. (I have a peculiar monitor setup, but both are set to their respective maximum resolution.)

res-applet was of no help.

This specific crash was fixed in 2.23.90, and fixed so this error displays a dialog and cleanly exits in 2.25.1 (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=553762). These later fix is in Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10.
