Bug Description

the progress bar goes from orange to all black like it should (showing that it is shutting down), but then the computer hangs up at the end. no orange in the progress bar left, keyboard is turned off, and it just sits there with "ubuntu" showing and an empty progress bar. only way out is by manually shutting down computer. this does not occur on "feisty". this happens on dell dimension 9200 and dell optiplex 330.

Please try the Following:

When the crash occurs, press Alt+SysRq+1 (one, not L) followed by Alt+SysRq+t. If using a text console, you should see a trace dumped to the screen. If the system is sufficiently alive, it will also be logged to /var/log/kern.log and visible in the output from dmesg. This information shows where the crash occurred, and should be included in any problem reports. Almost all of the output is important (so please don't copy the one line you think is important, because context means everything).

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hello

I am testing Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Alpha 6 on Sony Vaio VGN-Z540C ( The Z series) and I am having a similar problem. The computer hangs on reboot. I am on Kernel 2.6.27-3-generic.

Which file(s) do you need to continue the bug request.

Thank you

Hi David,

Care to actually open a new bug report? Even though you may be experiencing the same symptom that is reported here it really is hardware specific. It is helpful to the Ubuntu kernel teams if bug reports target one specific issue against a specific set of hardware as it will likely require fixes to different drivers.

You may want to give the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release a try first though to see if it has resolved the issue. You should be able to test using a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . @Cody, it would be great if you could test and give feedback as well since you are the original bug reporter. Thanks.

We tested Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta on a Dell Dimension 9200 here in the lab and it no longer experiences this issue. It was able to shutdown successfully without any hang. I'm setting this to Fix Released.

Changed in linux:
status: Incomplete → Fix Released

Hi Leann,

Thank you for letting me know. I haven't had a chance to test the veta
version yet, but as soon as I can, I will let you know.

Thank you,

 David
