Bug Description

1.lsb_release -rd:
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

uname -a:
2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Fri Jul 11 23:41:49 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Report errors and bugs to <email address hidden>, please.
analyzing CPU 0:
  driver: acpi-cpufreq
  CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0
  hardware limits: 600 MHz - 1.80 GHz
  available frequency steps: 1.80 GHz, 1.60 GHz, 1.40 GHz, 1.20 GHz, 1000 MHz, 800 MHz, 600 MHz
  available cpufreq governors: userspace, powersave, ondemand, conservative, performance
  current policy: frequency should be within 1.80 GHz and 1.80 GHz.
                  The governor "performance" may decide which speed to use
                  within this range.
  current CPU frequency is 1.80 GHz.

3. When viewing multiple flash sites Firefox uses 100% cpu and the cpu temperature raises to 65˚C. One would expect that some programm (like acpi) would manage cpu fan speed and tell the fan to turn faster on high temperature.
4. Instead the cpu fan turns with constant rpms no matter how high the cpu temperature. On some point the system freezes and hard reboot is needed. The only thing that somehow manages the temperature seems to be cpufreqd witch, when cpu temperature goes to ~60˚C, drops the frequency to 1.40 GHz.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description does not yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
2. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I installed linux-image-2.6.27-1-generic via Synaptic. The results are
the same as with 2.6.24-19-generic. I even updated acpid and
restarted it but no effect. The temperatures are:

- after the boot (on-demand governor, showing 600MHz):
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRS/temperature
temperature: 49 C
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRC/temperature
temperature: 50 C

- after 5 min of viewing flash in Firefox 3.0.1 in 3 tabs each tab a
different flash streaming movie (cpufreq plugin showing 1.8GHz wich is
the max so no throttling)
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRS/temperature
temperature: 60 C
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRC/temperature
temperature: 73 C

Since the fan was all the time almost silent (after the boot as on
heavy cpu usage with BOTH kernels and updated acpid), I got the
impression that the fan speed didn`t change at all at any time.

I don`t know what temperatures my Centrino based notebook can take but
it is not pleasant working on hot hot plastic. Aren`ŧ there any
settings on the ACPI side to control from which temperature the fan
should work with full capacity and under which temeprature it
shouldn`t spin at all, to be quiet? I googled a bit about this issue
but haven`ŧ found anything on it. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I am also suffering from something similar especially after upgrading to intrepid. This bug is similar to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/262550 and this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/285794

I'm having the exact some problem. I run seti@home constantly and the only way the computer stays below 70C is by downclocking itself to 800mhz. I dual boot this machine with Windows and under the same conditions (running seti@home) the computer spends the vaste majority of its time at the full clock speed.

Computer is Dell D630 with 2ghz Core2duo. Running 8.10 release candidate. Attached are the output of dmesg and lspci -vvnn as requested above. Please let me know if any more information is required.

I too appear to have at least a similar issue. I was viewing flash videos in Firefox when the system froze and both my caps lock and scroll lock keys started to blink. This required a hard reboot. Required files are attached.

Computer: Dell Vostro 1400 2.2Ghz Core2Duo running 8.10 final release.

Forgot to mention I did not note a change in fan speed either.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
