Hi Nick,

Is the new release bugfix-only?

Otherwise it will need an FFe.

Thanks,

James

+- KVM plugin
+ This release brings out the KVM plugin with limited functionality, it
+ provides basic provisioning and monitoring of KVM based VMs. The HVM xen
+ images can now be deployed on KVM as well. Some other functionality
+ like Snapshot/Restore and migration would be made available in the
+ upcoming releases.

+ConVirt 0.9
+-----------
+
+- Plugin Development Guide
+ With this release, developers can write plugin for their favorite
+ virtualized platform and make them manageable via ConVirt.
+
+- Server Pool Settings :
+ Now users can define their own settings at server pool, which get used
+ while provisioning any image in that server pool. For example a storage
+ destination can be specified at server pool level. All the vms provisioned i
+ in that server pool will get space allocated from that storage.
+
+- Image Groups :
+ Organize your images in to groups for easy management.
+
+- Enhanced Server information :
+ The Information tab when a server is selected, shows rich information
+ about the network interfaces and storage.
+
+- Summary Information :
+ The summary information gives you at a glance about your managed
+ environment.
+
+- Image Cache consistency :
+ The convirt creates a cache on each managed node for simplifying
+ repeated provisioning. This version addresses some consistency
+ problems between the image store and the caches on remote servers.

FYI. ConVirt 0.9.5 is just released.

Here is additional things from previous 0.9.1 release.

    * Drag and Drop Live Migration for KVM : Similar to Xen Live migration, now you can use drag and drop to migrate KVM virtual machines without downtime. In addition you can save a running KVM virtual machine state and restore it. KVM Management is also tested against common distros like Cent OS 5.2 and Ubuntu 8.0.4.

    * Storage management : This release adds support for shared storage management associated with a Server Pool. The users can declare their iSCSI, AOE and NFS shared storage and select Luns. ether disks and mount points at the time of provisioning. ConVirt gives Storage Utilization overview at Server Pool, Server or Virtual Machine level.

   * Critical Bug fixes.

Hi Nick,

Either 0.9.1 or 0.9.5 are going to require a FFe to enter Intrepid.

It is a new package in Intrepid though, so regressions from past
releases shouldn't be a concern, it would just be whether a new
release is of higher quality than the one we currently have in
the archive.

Would you be willing to write the FFe?

Have you been using the new version? What is your impression
of it?

Thanks,

James

Hi James,

Unfortunately, I have not really been using this new version. However, perhaps this should just wait until Jaunty, and then be upgraded, as there only appears to be more minor bug fixes.

I think supporting KVM is a pretty major new feature.

Especially as KVM is Ubuntu's official VM solution, and virt-manager (the other GUI which manages KVM) is not always the best tool, depending on what you do with your VMs.

There is now a 0.9.6 release, which is listed as including "Critical Bug Fixes" along with the other features (like KVM support, and more importantly for me, shared storage management) that were previously mentioned.

I'd say it's pretty important to get this package updated, otherwise why even bother with the now quite old release that's currently packaged (0.8.2 on my Intrepid system)? It's not like upstream will give any support for it if people run into problems.

Also, the ConVirt wiki has recommendations that people on Ubuntu use alien to [http://xenman.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Xen_ubuntu convert the SuSE packages], rather than use the packages included in the distro.

Please send updated package for Jaunty and 0.9.6 and please add (LP: #256267)

Does anyone actually use the Ubuntu convirt packages? The convirt program doesn't even run for me - bug #525908 - so I am obviously curious as to whether anyone is using the Ubuntu packages or does everyone use the upstream packages?
