Cannot paste Excel figure (Corel does)

Bug Description

When I simply copy scientific figures made in Excel and try to paste it into Inkscape, nothing happens. When I do the same in Corel, it works fine. After saving this Corel-transformed figure in Corel as svg I can open it in Inkscape and edit without problem. So, the Corel can transform it into an Inkscape-editable format (WMF >> SVG?), while Inkscape itself cannot. Why is that? Is that related to the WMF/EMF stuff reported elsewhere? Does it mean that there will be no solution for this issue in the future? PNG is not acceptable. I need editable vector graphic. I do the final touches of all my scientific figures in Corel right now, because it allows precise arrangement and sizing. Working in svg is just fine, I like Inkscape, but this import issue is annoying... Please, recommend some solution!

Hello!

What version of Inkscape are you using? and what OS?

Copy and paste using vector formats was added after the 0.46 release, I think. Copy and paste using EMF on Windows certainly was.

If you know some specific WMF/EMF import issues please file seperate bugs with minimal example files demonstrating each issue.

Thanks

Dear Ulferikson,

I use Inkscape 0.46 build apr 1 2008 on a PC with WinXP.

Inkscape pastes Excel 2007 figure better than Corel, however when I save this file as svgz in Corel it is converted to vector graphics (a pop-up window allows embedding text as editable text and a lot of other parameter can be adjusted). Inkscape does not convert it into vector when I save in svg or svgz. How shell I save it to get vector graphic? The "vectorize bitmap" produces unusably complex output (at least I cannot use it properly...). The Corel vectorized file is fine for Inkscape editing.

I do not know what file format Excel 2007 use for copying a figure (png? wmf? emf?) and I do not know what happens during conversion, whether it is the same as "vectorize bitmap", or the original pasted image is not a bitmap but a metafile?

What to do? Play with "vectorize bitmap"?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

The relevant bugs for copy/paste with system clipboard are:
Bug 170185 (sf909735): Support for copy/paste with system clipboard
Bug 217609: [Patch] Support for copy/paste with Windows clipboard

I'm not sure if the first fix is in 0.46, but the second is not. You need a newer version than 0.46 to successfully copy and paste vector graphics between Inkscape and other applications on Windows. What you report is the status of Inkscape 0.46 (it doesn't work), but it will be fixed in Inkscape 0.47. If you are anxious to test and help improve further you can have a look at http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/

Dear Ulferikson,

Thank you very much for your help!

I am glad to hear that it will be fixed in 0.47. Until that I take a look at those developmental versions you recommended.

Otherwise, I love Inkscape, it is a nice and easy to use (and really fast) application. I have used Corel for a long time, but now I use exclusively Inkscape (except the above mentioned temporary conversion).

Best wishes!

Peter

I tested this and it works 0.47 rev 22040. I made a form in excel and copied it to inkscape and then the other way around. Both shape and style were correctly pasted.

Peter: is up to you to test again.
