I did more checking. It seems like any page with a Java applet crashes. This did kind of work for some sites a few weeks ago. The gcj version of the java plugin is being used. I see there are other bugs about java plugin issues so I guess you can mark this as a duplicate of one of those. Thanks.

The old. I think this is some java plugin problem as I mentioned in
my update to the bug.

Could you please check if ~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so is a link that points to the installed plug-in. If exists and is not a link, Firefox is surely to crash on every site with a java applet.

i'm on 32-bit Hardy.

for me, the applet wasn't starting. i had both sun-java6-plugin and icedtea-gcjwebplugin installed, and the Icedtea one was overriding the Sun one.

i first tried removing icedtea-gcjwebplugin, which made the Sun plugin active. trying the applet again caused the browser to crash, reproducably. i've attached the error output (i'm not sure if the first line is related).

i then tried removing sun-java6-plugin and installing icedtea-gcjwebplugin on its own. same result as with both installed.

then i tried gcjwebplugin. that brought up a different "do you trust this source" message, which i accepted, and the applet didn't start.

i removed that and tried, as a last resort, sun-java5-plugin. with this, the applet loads and works fine.

It happens to me; Ubuntu 8.10 (2.6.24-19-generic), sun-java6.jre plugin, Firefox 3.0.6 and the new Facebook, when I go to the page where you upload photo the Java photo uploader tries to start, you see a box, then just white. Firefox hangs, there's nothing you can do, you can't click a tab or do anything with Firefox. One of my CPU cores goes to 100%, sometimes the photo uploader will load but half the time I have to kill the Firefox process, even End Process doesn't work sometimes you have to kill it.

My FF is crashed after second upload:
after first launch of FF, if I go to upload photos, Java applet is loading and upload works, if I want to upload more, when trying to launch the applet again, then there is the gray box and 100% of FF and I just need to kill FF.

I run FF 3.0.8
Ubuntu 8.10
sun java 6

We create an album and then click on 'share,' which should take us to a screen to select photos for uploading. A few moments later, the FFx session disappears from the screen.

Is there a workaround?

I see the same error when attempting to upload, using 10.04, Firefox 3.6.3, and Java (icedtea) 1.6.0_18. The only workaround is to use the Facebook "simple" uploader. The link to the simple uploader is at the bottom of the page that causes the crash (yes, I know...). I managed to grab it and copy to Tomboy, then kill the java process and firefox. Going straight to the simple uploader is the only workaround for FB users having this issue (as it doesn't use java) that I'm aware of so far.

I confirm the bug
Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit)
firefox 3.6.8
IcedTea NPR Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea6 1.8.1 (6b18-1.8.1-0ubuntu1))

I think its a problem with the IcedTea plugin for amd64 architecture.
