well... i had download it, installed and had run aticonfig --initial and aticonfig --initial=check. It wrote all fine, fgrlx section found. Ok... let's restart X. Done. Try to run compiz - white screen for a few seconds and then message that it can't enable.

In xorg.log i found error.

Can you also post your dmesg? It sounds like the kernel module isn't
loaded.

Or possibly the wrong kernel module version was loaded. Make sure you give
it a clean boot or rmmod fglrx/modprobe fglrx.

You were right.

rmmod fglrx/modprobe fglrx

ERROR: Module fglrx does not exist in /proc/modules

I found a few files in /lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.24-19-generic/fglrx

fglrx.mod.o
firegl_public.o
libfglrx_ip.a.GCC4

but not any mention of it in /proc/modules

P.S. Guys, could you tell me for somebody who can fix bugs in that damn driver?

Good day desss,

I've just uploaded a new 8.543 version of -fglrx to Intrepid which now should work with xserver 1.5. Would you mind testing this new version and reporting back whether this issue is still present? If it is, it would be helpful if you could (re-)post your Xorg.0.log from running with this version. Thanks ahead of time.

If you don't have Intrepid installed on your system, you can test this by booting an Intrepid LiveCD (available from cdimage.ubuntu.com), using either the -vesa or -ati driver, then update to the latest version of Ubuntu, install fglrx, and then logout and back in. Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log will confirm whether you've loaded FGLRX successfully.

If you find any new issues, please report them as separate bugs. You can use the tool `ubuntu-bug fglrx-installer` which will gather the necessary files and create the launchpad report for you to fill in more easily.

Those warning messages are normal.

Since there seems to not be evidence of crashing, closing the bug. If people are able to reproduce the crash, collect a full backtrace (directions are at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing) and reopen this bug.

No time to reproduce it today and get a backtrace, but I can confirm the bug (or something very like it) is still present on Intrepid. I am running fglrx + compiz, and if I play enough video in that configuration Xorg will reliably crash... eventually.

I'm reopening this bug so that you'll bug me about it before closing and hopefully that'll be when I have more time to produce a backtrace, if I haven't already got around to it.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Confirming what Dave Abrahams describes: playing video with fglrx and compiz enabled crashes the server -- after a while. No instant crash, most of the time after some seconds.
