Bug Description

Problem is particularly bad when PC is booted with CD in tray. it never spins down. If I boot without CD in tray and insert CD for playback, the problem appears to die after a while if I remember right.
This problem does not happen in XP so it doesn't look like a bios or cd firmware problem.

I have a Sony DVD writer DRU 820A.

Interestingly hdparm listed it as idle when in fact it was spinning at top speed noisiliy. I got i to spin down with the -y option.

owl@owl:~$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 drive state is: active/idle

owl@owl:~$ sudo hdparm -y /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 issuing standby command

(Drive silent now).

Next time I insert CD the racket begins again until I issue another hdparm -y.

Can we have Ubuntu fix this without a manual work around?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

So do I install 2.6.26 or 2.6.27? Will do it in a few hours.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 254369

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. I am very new to the Linux community and have recently installed Kubuntu in a partition. I have the problem described in this thread - the CD/DVD ROM drive spins up and is very noisy, for no apparent reason, whether or not there is a disc in the drive and whatever program I have open or close. I can see no immediate reason for this.

I am not technical with Linux but willing and able to learn, so perhaps someone could talk me through the steps I have to take to report and resolve this issue?

At the moment I simply can't use the Linux installation because of the noise. Windows XP is fine but I would prefer not to use that.

Thanks.

Sounds like it is spinning up and then spinning down every 20 seconds.
It then immediately starts spinning back up again for me.
It appears to spin down 20 seconds after the last access if a CD is inserted

Doesn't occur if the CD-drive is in an ejected state.
Doesn't occur if the CD-drive is empty.

May actually be subtly different bug.
