Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic

Syntek USB Camera does not work with Skype as reported at http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=101853

Part of dmesg on my Asus F5N laptop running Hardy 64-bit with recent updates (2.6.24-19-generic kernel):

[ 59.152308] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 59.240922] stk11xx: Syntek USB2.0 webcam driver startup
[ 59.240959] stk11xx: Syntek USB2.0 - STK-1135 based webcam found.
[ 59.240961] stk11xx: Syntek AVStream USB2.0 1.3M WebCam - Product ID 0x6A31.
[ 59.240964] stk11xx: Release: 0005
[ 59.240966] stk11xx: Number of interfaces : 1
[ 59.243105] stk11xx: Initialize USB2.0 Syntek Camera
[ 59.351559] stk11xx: Check device return error (0x0201 = 0C) !
[ 59.412454] stk11xx: Syntek USB2.0 Camera is ready
[ 59.412505] stk11xx: Syntek USB2.0 Camera is now controlling video device /de
v/video0
[ 59.412533] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb_stk11xx_driver
[ 59.412536] stk11xx: v1.3.1 : Syntek USB Video Camera

Skype forum suggest this "Check device return error (0x0201 = 0C) !" string is because syntek driver was compiled without ioctl32 support. Hope this will be fixed with the next kernel modules update.

Hi Lex,

Since the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release is actively being worked on, care to confirm if this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your results. If this issue still exists, per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following updated information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* lsusb > lsusb.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies .

Additionally, beginning with the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 development cycle the linux-ubuntu-modules package was actually merged with the linux kernel package. Going forward, bugs that would have been reported against linux-ubuntu-modules should now just be reported against linux. I'll go ahead and add the 'linux' task for this report. However, against linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a Stable Release Update - http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The bug was fixed by new stkwebcam kernel module in Alpha 4. However, when moving to the new kernel webcam is not being detected at all! Running "modprobe stkwebcam" does not help. Ekiga shows no input video device as well. Tested on Alpha 5.

I recently upgraded to intrepid and now have exactly the same problem. Even though under administration>hardware it shows that the driver is running, my webcam is not recognized in Skype, cheese, or camorama. My kernel is 2.6.27-8-generic. Is this being worked on or is there a solution to this yet?
