Thank you for having taken the time to report this bug to help make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

current install is Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-10-generic, Gnome 2.4.1

the problem arises less often and for shorter durations but still occurs.

Do they go uninteruptable and stay uninteruptable? That might be a bug.

From what it sounds like, these programs are just going temporarily unresponsive due to high system load. This happens on every operating system and usually all it requires is a short wait before the system can catch up to all the recent input/data manipulation. There is an option to disable the window "gray" effect in compiz if you do not like it, although its purpose is to remind you to wait a second and allow the computer to "catch up" so to speak. The more demanding the program, the more you tend to see this happen.

Is that helpful? Or do you think your problem is something other than what I described above.

on further examination it is not a matter of system load. memory use
is not spiking and cpu utilisation is not high either. often the cpu
is not even scaling up when the freezes occur.

Interesting. Can you provide me with any steps to reliably reproduce the error?
Thanks in advance.

other than sending you my laptop and letting you boot it up not yet.

it does not seem to matter how many apps i have running from one to
8-10. nor does uptime seem to factor in; it happens right after i
start up or can not happen after 3 days but plague me on the 4th.

Have run the memory check for 36 hrs without error.

when I was dual booting I did not see similar issues in winXP.

tried running a pure gnome setup to see if it was the mix of kde apps
installed but still happened. have not tried kubuntu to eliminate the
possibility of it being something gnome related. not fond of the kde
desktop.

Do you still experience this issue in 9.04 or 9.10?

I am also experiencing this bug, in Karmic Koala.

I currently have 5 uninterruptible evince processes. It says they're stuck with waiting channel "real_lookup".

I can not get rid of these processes without logging out/in or rebooting (both unacceptable when other running tasks need to stay running).

Every new evince process becomes uninterruptible, and it is impossible (!?) even for root to stop these processes (sudo kill -9 does nothing--which I feel should never be the case with usermode applications).

Also, I should note, there is no high load on my system. I have two CPU's and one is consistently around 0% right now (the other is pegged at 100% running another task that I don't want to shutdown). In addition, I have well over 2 gigabytes of free memory--not a paging issue either.

I'm also seeing this problem with processes going uninterruptible, and it looks like my dual-core CPU is not getting utilized either.

The Gnome Windows Manager is completely unusable -- keeps temporarily freezing when I move windows around. I suspect that's related to this issue of processes going uninterruptible.

This started happening after I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10
