Here is what is causing the error:

(the locale warnings might be a red-herring). Did you see any debconf question/output when samba-common failed?

Thanks,

Hi Michael,

I got a query to select using the existing samba config file.
I selected Diff, thinking I could go back (to use the original) but I then
cancelled and the configuration errors continued.
The LC_ALL errors pervaded the whole upgrade configuration changes.

thanks for you help.

Mike

Hardy Heron is working fine, so it hasn't crippled me (haven't noticed any
problems so far).

Hi Mike,

When you chose the 'diff' option, was the diff displayed for you? Afterwards, what did you choose to try to get back to the menu?

Is this package still in a broken state on your system (allowing further debugging), or have you since resolved this problem?

Hi,

the Diff was displayed.I cancelled the Diff and the installation continued.
I think my original samba configuration was retained as I still share the
same folders as when I was running Dapper.
As far as I know it's not broken, but as the system reported several other
bugs with other packages, I was unsure.

thanks for your help.

cheers

Mike
