Bug Description

After my computer froze (see bug 248655) Plasma will not start anymore. There is no indication of anything going wrong at all, but nothing plasma-related gets drawn (no panel, no desktop background, no cashews, nothing).

Is the display black?
If so KWin fails to load and thus the complete login fails as well (plasma adapts to the status of desktop effects in KWin as far as I know.

I just came home to discover an error as described above- My puter was shutdown when I returned home. On reboot, Kubuntu gets as far as the splashscreen, but then goes black on load of desktop. I confirmed that while the desktop isnt rendered, it is responding to key and mouse presses, i.e. it will accept Ctrl+Alt+Del, and selecting where I know shutdown to be will shutdown Kubuntu. It will even bring up the Application Launcher window but with no elements.

As in #248655, I enabled desktop effects shortly prior (within 12hrs) to abnormal shutdown and KDE errors.

On ASUS F3Sa laptop, running KUbuntu 8.0.4

I have the same problem....
happened after a lockup and a ctrl-alt-backspace...complete reboot does nothing...plasma appears to be segfaulting for some reason

UPDATE: deleting .kde and .kderc allows plasma to come back up but all kde related settings are gone (obviously) including the fix for the dual monitor right click/background issue which I cant find anymore

Original reporter never replied. It's very unlikely that any other problems described here are related.
