Bug Description

The Keyboard Layout Option "Shift cancels CapsLock" does indeed make the shift key cancel the locking, but it will not switch off the Caps Lock LED.
To reproduce: Set CapsLock Key Behaviour to Default, set "Shift cancels CapsLock". Press keys in this sequence:

<A>a
<CapsLock>[LED -> On]
<A>A
<Shift>
<A>a
<CapsLock>[LED -> Off]
<A>A
<Shift>
<A>a

Sorry, I'm not clear what handles these keys. It is probably an interaction between the X server and some part of Gnome.

Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

This is the default behavior. The Shift should not toggle the CAPS lock LED light.

Feature, not a bug... :)

So the Caps Lock LED does not indicate that Caps Lock is active, but
rather that the Caps Lock key has been pressed an odd number of times?
It is a 1 bit counter?

So all other implementations where the LED indicates the state are wrong
because nobody needs to be warned that Caps Lock is active, bu everybody
want's to know how many times the key has been pressed. Well actually
only the lowest bit of that number.

Come on, you're pulling my leg.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem. Setting the CapsLock option to "Caps lock toggles shift so all keys are affected" (the "shift cancels caps lock" option disappeared in gnome about a year ago), I get the desired effect (shift does cancel caps lock), but the keyboard caps lock light no longer functions.

Worth a separate bug report?

Using a newly installed 8.10.

Hi lupe,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Using Jaunty.
Changing option in System->Preferences->Keyboard, layout tab, Layout options... button.
Setting the CapsLock option to "Caps lock toggles shift so all keys are affected", seems indeed to give the desired effect:
<A>a
<CapsLock>[LED -> On]
<A>A
<Shift> [LED -> Off , which seems to be a new correct behavious ]
<A>a
<CapsLock>[LED -> On]
<A>A
<Shift> [Led -> Off]
<A>a

In "Miscellaneous compatibility options", "Shift cancels CapsLock" is there, but changing back Capslock option to default, then "adding" "Shift cancels CapsLock" option. I seems to see no effect of pressing Shift key without an other key. I don't seem to see any effect in fact.

Well, I consider this bug does not really needs Xorg.0.log and lspci info.
And I think there is enough info for a developer to look at.
So changing to Confirmed.

Would seems reasonable to me to (Will not fix) this bug.
Then open a new one with "Jaunty regression: Shift cancels CapsLock does not work". and fill it on 'Gnome' rather than X.

But I'll let a developer give his opinion on this for now.

I think Bryce Harrington from Canonical has a better idea about bug triaging than the rest of us, and as a member of Ubuntu Bug Control, I would ask that this information is provided please, i.e. the output of `lspci -vvnn`, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old files after reproducing this issue. Also if your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has been edited manually, please provide that too, remembering to attach each file separately.
Thank you.

Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

This has been "fixed" by making "Shift cancels CapsLock" a no-op. I.e. You can check or unchack the option, but then behaviour will not change. I'll file a new bug if I can't find one that already descriibes this "fix".
