no titlebar in writer

Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I encountered a potential bug in Open Office Writer (Word Processor). (From here on I will denote as OOW)

I am using Ubuntu version 8.04. Open Office version 2.4

When I click on the OOW, it right away comes up full screen and not in a window. The orange titlebar is missing. I can force the title menu to appear (but not the bar itself) by entering the ALT+SPACE combination.

Within the titlebar menu only minimize is able to be selected. The Unmaximize, Move, and Resize options are grayed out and cannot be selected via the mouse or direct keyboard shortcut.

I have reinstalled OOW as well as the Open Office core programs (I didn't do a full removal because I have important information I need to keep in Evolution) and that didn't help.

The problem appears to be isolated only to OOW, the other Open Office applications appear to be OK and the Titlebar is visible as well as all functions are enabled.

If this isn't a bug, please assist as I cannot switch back and forth between windows with OOW operating in this manner.

Thank You,

Geo

Does turning off compiz and/or moving/removing ~/.openoffice.org2 resolve the problem for you?

What is compiz?  Never heard of it.I have removed open office core (base) and writer which are causing the problem.   I couldn't uninstall the ENTIRE package of open office because Evolution is a part of it and I have important data there already.BUT while I have you, perhaps you can tell me if there is a configuration file for writer that I may delete or edit to fix the problem.I have done a few more tests and realize that open office MAY be causing problems with the new 'effects' that Ubuntu Hardy has.  As it is, that OS is known to be buggy and this may not be entirely the fault of Open Office, however, it seems to be persistent with only the Open Office Word Processor.  It seems as if the word processor is stuck in some kind of 'full screen, no titlebar' mode.  It is a major inconvenience because with the Ubuntu taskbar covered, I cannot switch between programs.  The only thing I can do is ALT-SPACEBAR and select to push it over to the next desktop.  But it is a pain to do that because it requires 'multiple moves', and it is something I shouldn't have to do.Anyway, as I said, if there is a configuration file that I should look at, perhaps we can start there.  I really don't want to delete the entire package and loose the data I have in Evolution.Thank You,Geo----- Original Message -----From: Chris Cheney Date: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 8:51 amSubject: [Bug 248280] Re: no titlebar in writerTo: <email address hidden>> Does turning off compiz and/or moving/removing ~/.openoffice.org2> resolve the problem for you?> > Thanks,> > Chris Cheney> > ** Changed in: openoffice.org (Ubuntu)> Status: New => Incomplete> > -- > no titlebar in writer> https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/248280> You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber> of the bug.> > Status in “openoffice.org” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete> > Bug description:> Binary package hint: openoffice.org> > I encountered a potential bug in Open Office Writer (Word > Processor). You might be able to clear up the issue by removing ~/.openoffice.org2 directory. Compiz is the visual effects program in Ubuntu, sometimes setting visual effects to none corrects problems. OpenOffice.org is known to have several problems when visual effects is turned on. The part you think is evolution is probably the package openoffice.org-evolution, that package can be safely removed if you want without removing evolution it just provides a way from openoffice.org to get address book data from evolution.

Hello Chris<<> You might be able to clear up the issue by removing ~/.openoffice.org2> directory. Compiz is the visual effects program in Ubuntu, sometimes> setting visual effects to none corrects problems.>>Does Ubuntu Studio come with this right out of installation?  I don't recall anything by that name, but I DO recall a 'visual effects' tab in preference for setting up the desktop.  I did set that to 'none' when I had other problems.  But I made that adjustment AFTER the problem happened with Open Office Writer.<< OpenOffice.org is> known to have several problems when visual effects is turned on. The> part you think is evolution is probably the package > openoffice.org-> evolution, that package can be safely removed if you want without> removing evolution it just provides a way from openoffice.org to get> address book data from evolution.>>Ok, if everything in Evolution will be saved, then let me know what to do to properly uninstall Open Office and put it back on my system.I am going to assume that with the visual effects turned off that this problem will not happen again?  Because I am lucky it happened now JUST as I started to use Open Office.  But later on down the road I could have important documents and settings made.  So we are lucking out that this happened now and not later.Still I think perhaps talking to the Ubuntu devs about this situation should be made a priority, since many people are on Ubuntu and are probably going to use Open Office as a replacement for MS Office under Windows.  Thank You,Geo> > Chris> > -- > no titlebar in writer> https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/248280> You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber> of the bug.> > Status in “openoffice.org” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete> > Bug description:> Binary package hint: openoffice.org> > I encountered a potential bug in Open Office Writer (Word > Processor). Hello,I solved the problem by NOT selecting "visual effects" within Ubuntu (that was after a complete obliteration of Open Office AND Ubuntu.   With visual effects off, I no longer have the problem.  You might want to discuss this issue with the Ubuntu devs as this seems to be much their issue as well as an issue with Open Office.Thanx,Geo----- Original Message -----From: Pablo Castellano Date: Monday, September 29, 2008 5:42 pmSubject: [Bug 248280] Re: no titlebar in writerTo: <email address hidden>> We are closing this bug report because it lacks the information > we need> to investigate the problem, as described in the previous comments.> Please reopen it if you can give us the missing information, and don't> hesitate to submit bug reports in the future.
