Bug Description

Hi,
Totem-gstreamer fails to play a dvd for me with the error:

'Totem could not play 'dvd://'.

Failed to play: Could not open resource for writing.'

This is on breezy totem-gstreamer version 1.2.0-0ubuntu3

Thanks for your bug report. Do you have gstreamer0.8-dvd installed? Does it work
with totem-xine?

Yes, I do have gstreamer0.8-dvd installed.
The disc plays fine in totem-xine.

(I've tried a couple of dvds in this - Wargames and THX-1138, both the UK PAL,
discs).

Do you have the same error on a video? What videosink do you use?

The videosink is selected with gstreamer-properties, or gconf-editor to edit
"/system/gstreamer/0.8/default/videosink"

Ah OK - so gstreamer-properties has for video

Default sink
   Output: XWindows (X11/XShm/Xv)
   Pipeline: (greyed out) xvimagesink

The 'test' button produces a nice testcard with some static at the bottom corner.

Default source:
   Input: Video for Linux (v4l)
   Pipeline: (greyed out) v4lsrc

The Audio tab has
Default sink
Output: ESD - Enlightenment Sound Daemon
   Pipeline: (greyed out) esdsink

The test button for that gives 'Failed to construct test pipeline for 'ESD -
Enlightenment Sound Daemon'

Default source
Input: OSS - Open Sound System
   Pipeline: (greyed out) osssrc

The test button for that gives 'Failed to construct test pipeline for 'OSS -
Open Sound System'

However, I've not got Audio problems in anything.

Do you use esound, is esd running (ps ax | grep esd)? Could you try with osssink
or alsasink instead of esdsink? What do you call "anything", other applications
using gstreamer like rhythmbox?

OK, some more info.
I found that it will play video streams with no associated audio (i.e. an m2v);
so I've found if I switch that gstreamer-properties to anything other than ESD
totem now plays anything. So I'm not sure if my problem is esd related
or the way totem talks to it - is there a good esd test?

(I wrote my previous reply before seeing your last message)
No, esd was not running - and if I start esd then totem runs fine.

So I suggest all we need here is totem to give a sensible error message
to point the user in the direction of the audio stuff, or to point them
at gstreamer-properties.

now totem uses gstreamer0.10 which has a different set of issues, that bug is deprecated, I'm closing it. totem with gstreamer0.10 doesn't play DVD well for the moment (no menus, no subtitles selections), there is other bugs opened about that

Changed in totem:
assignee: seb128 → desktop-bugs
status: Needs Info → Rejected

the trouble with ubuntu, is that it will not accept any downloaded, or cd installed program, same thing with dvd, totem will not play it, I am seriously considering going back to windows, even the official ubuntu book will not give me any directions on how to correct the problem I really plead for somebody to give me some help, so that I can enjoy using this new program,
 thank you very much
