Bug Description

It worked somewhat ok with Ubuntu 8.04 32-Bit (the WLAN function had to be switched on with the specific key when starting the computer and no later, otherwise Ubuntu did not manage to connect to the WLAN). You did not have to press the computer's WLAN button to make it work.

WLAN does NOT work with Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit (fully updated). Pressing the WLAN button on the computer has no effect either.

The online product description says the following about the built-in WLAN:

- Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN OR
- Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.

The specific key (see above) still does not work with Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha with all updates, whereas the specific Bluetooth key works fine.

Nearly a month and many updates later, still no change on this issue. AFAIR the chip itself is supported but WLAN cannot be used because you have to switch it on using the above mentioned key.

works for me.
Had same Problem (Thinkpad T61 with intel 4965) after one of the latest updates in kubuntu 8.10, wlan works withoud encryption + with wpa2/psk with German T-com Speedport W700V router. I installed from scratch with the given Kubuntu Intrepid disk for 64bit.

KNetworkManager didn't set wlan up until I configured a new, unencrypted connection after the update, wich I reconfigured encrypted afterwards.

Hello.

I'm having the same problem here. (Acer Travelmate 6292 with Intrepid)
While on the LiveCD, wireless worked randomly: i.e. randomly changing on restart. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it doesn't.
After install, however, the wireless wouldn't work anymore. On hardy, it worked pretty much perfect, but now it does not.
The Wireless checkbox seems to be enabled, but it's seemingly not trying to connect to any wifi network at all. Countless reboots don't help either.

Willing to help with debug outputs etc. Hopefully this will get fixed soon, because now i'm left stranded with XP instead =(.

Hello.

Ubuntu 8.10 x 64, 2.6.27-7
Acer 6292 laptop.

WLAN key still doesn't work. After updating to 2.6.27-7 kernel in auto-update, this key works for two or three times, if WLAN controller was enabled at a boot time.

May be it is time to confirm this very anoying bug?
Should i give some other information about my system?

When system starts:
WLAN is enabled.

Seems I was wrong...
having two ways for activating wlan:
1. soft-on/off via fn+F5 (wlan, wlan+blue, blue, none)
2. hardware switch (wlan+blue on/off)

while switching on and off often (too fast) via "soft"-off/on wlan doesn't come up again. Only a HW-Reset via hw-switch brings back functionality. Using soft-switch slowly doesn't affect wlan-disfunction

Default: wlan + bluetooth is enabled at startup.

This bug was described in known issues for 8.10 release.

"Cannot reactivate Intel 3945/4965 wireless if booting with killswitch enabled
On laptops with Intel 3945 or Intel 4965 wireless chipsets and a killswitch for the wireless antenna, starting the system with the killswitch enabled (i.e., with wireless disabled) will prevent re-enabling the wireless by toggling the killswitch. As a workaround, users should boot the system with the killswitch disabled. A future kernel update is expected to address this issue."
