Bug Description

I try to add a new samba share -- I already have one working.
I select Places->Connect to Server...
I'm confused by the options, so I click "Browse network..."
I get a directory including existing servers I have working (sftp, other samba
shares, etc.) and a bunch of generic-looking Desktop icons with the following:
smb-workgroup-NAME where NAME is the NAME of a server/share (what are they
called? what are the differences?) on my local network.
When I try to open the share I want (ANTIETAM), I get an error warning me that
the filename indicates a "desktop configuration file" but the contents indicate
"x-directory/smb-share". I am told to rename the file if I know it is safe (to
what I don't know).
Needless to say, I don't know how to rename the file.
Opening it with nautilus via the open-with dialog doesn't work.

So, this bug report is for the weird confusing filetype error.

fwiw, I still haven't gotten my samba share up, but I have yet to determine what
bug (usability or otherwise) is at fault for that. I am simply trying to do with
Nautilus what I can successfully do at the commandline with the following:

smbclient -U myusername -W PARKER //ANTIETAM/myusername

PARKER is my domain. ANTIETAM is our fileserver, on which I have a folder named
for me.

Thanks for your bug. There is a bug upstream about that:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320557. What version of Ubuntu do you use?

This bug is present for me in Edgy. I also get frequent crashes of Nautilus whilst browsing Windows shares under Edgy's Nautilus.

if you get crashes please open bugs with a debug backtrace for them

Any luck with backtraces?

Here's the funny thing - with nautilus-dbg installed, i can't trigger the crashing (just the errors)

Aha! No more backtraces at home, but getting them at work. I took the liberty of installing some other dbg packages, e.g. for gtk2 and glib, to get a more complete trace.

that backtrace matches upstream http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=348161 which is fixed to feisty

I am seeing this same problem in Feisty.
To reproduce:
To reproduce:
Ubuntu menu->Places->Network->Windows Network->the alanos->NATHANS
where "the alanos" is my smb workgroup (though I usually type it in all upper case, nautilaus is showing it in lower case) and "NATHANS" is the name of an XP Home PC. Launching NATHANS gives this error.

"Cannot open NATHANS

"The filename "NATHANS" indicates that this file is of type "desktop configuration file". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "x-directory/smb-share". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

"Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "x-directory/smb-share", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file."

Right-clicking on the NATHANS icon and choosing "Connect to this server" adds a similar NATHANS icon to my desktop. Launching that icon results in the same error.

Looking at the properties of the icon:
Basic tab:
Name: NATHANS
Type: x-directory/smb-share
Contents: unreadable
Location: smb://the%20alanos
Permissions tab:
The permissions of "NATHANS" could not be determined.
Using Places->Connect to Server... and specifying a share name works fine.
Open With tab:
Open folder

Forgot to add that I get the exact same results when trying to connect to an XP Pro workstation.

Also, I scrambled the last three lines of the last post.

Is this bug still being worked on? This is one of the major reasons I use KDE.

This bug means you cannot get to Samba shares, so this must be marked higher than "medium" and fixed for Gutsy at the very least. The "connect to server" alternative does not work for me and is counter-intuitive for new users.

Okay, this bug is fixed in Tribe 5. However, I still couldn't get to my Samba shares, but this might be a problem with my setup.

I have 7.04 fully updated running on a Dell Vostroand noticed that Samba shares created in my hard drive or CD-ROM driver are fully functional in Nautilus, instead it is impossible to enter shares created on a USB external drive.
However the Samba shares are fully functional when accessing via LAN or in a Vmware VM with XP.
